That list is the 500 fastest computers not the entire installed base...and yes China has only 5 in that list but their total is extremely high.

I've worked for at least two companies which had supercomputers in their basements. One was a financial company and the other a data mining company...not exactly the types of companies which pop into a person's mind first when thinking about who would buy them. But they didn't pay 100's of millions for them.

So I guess which is more impressive....spending 100's of millions to make one super fast computer or selling 100's of far far smaller supercomputers to companies so they can be more competitive. But with systems moving to the cloud maybe the days of the supercomputer in the basement are waning.

Keep in mind the fastest computers are still "one off's" due to their ridiculous size and cost.

In reality this is the size of your typical company supercomputer

that again indicates the pointless-ness of a "supercomputer"... those machines are either play-things for mathematicians or as in recent years, another element to promote nationalistic pride...

1. you mention "financial company"... removing money system will removing the fake science of economics, and thus any financial analyst or business school or "financial services" company... install socialism, remove supercomputer.

2. you mention "data mining"... that is another useless engagement... in socialist system, commercial data mining won't be present... in socialist system, gathering statistics for security and improvements in society will be ensured by adopting decentralized direct-democracy socialism... one doesn't need supercomputer for that.
