Dhaka, Nov 10 (bdnews24.com)— Main opposition BNP has called for granting China full membership in the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC). The party's chairperson Khaleda Zia made the call in while talking to a delegation of the Chinese Communist Party on Thursday morning at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. "The delegation discussed the issue of China becoming a full member of the South-Asian platform during the meeting and Khaleda Zia expressed her all-out support in the issue," BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, while briefing journalist after the meeting. Khaleda hoped for the co-operation of China with issues like building a sea- port in Sonadia island, railway, mineral resources, water resources, electricity, training of defence forces, etc. in the meeting. "The opposition leader had a successful meeting with the delegation," said Fakhrul. Liu Xi, secretary of party's Beijing committee headed the representative team. Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Xianyi was also present at the meeting. The 17th SAARC summit has kicked off in Maldives on Thursday. China is currently an observing member of SAARC.

Khaleda also expressed her support to United China. She said ' Bangladesh and BNP both believe Taiwan is a part of Mainland China, We want to see them with china in future'

China is not a part of South Asia. So where is the question of China joining SAARC arise. Anyway SAARC is a useless organization.

Well, her husband first got the idea of SAARC  So it's a mission for her.

China is an observer state. Although, I doubt if it'd be in India's interests as far as China being a member of SAARC goes.

Yea problem is here that India does not want china to be a member of SAARK . It wnats to be the sole ''Shark'' in the SAARK.

i have a question.. Zia was the man who changed foreign policy of Bangladesh leaning towards china america, away from india, ussr....
Why the hell he formed SAARC then which doesnt include china but india?

good question may be he took china as a non south asian country and didn't want to annoyed India farther by focusing multi dimensional foreign policy instead of indo soviet policy of past .

It might actually be a good idea. You need a counterweight to make any group functional. Otherwise SAARC countries will always think that India is trying to dominate them.

He and Mujib both had high ambition to become influential world leader, something which our present leaders lack too much....

With so much distrust among member nations SAARC will never become successful.....

Yes, you have a good argument. There must be counterbalnce of forces. China is a large country with border in the west, north and south. So, it can be a member of any organizations that include its neighbours. China, India and Bangladesh have a common river called Brahmaputra. Business and trade are flourishing between China and India, and between Bangladesh and China. A common non-military platform may help all the countries in the fields of regional connectivity, water sharing, border re-drawing, environmental matters and others.

Without a new input SAARC has become a paper organization. It has no futuristic policy for the region. All the countries distrust India. Even good-intentioned Indian overtures are not seen in a positive light. With China in the SAARC Indian bureaucrats may widen their outlook and may stop imposing their wishes on other member states.

Considering that India is a large country, it'll automatically start dominating everything in the neighborhood. China can act as a counterpart. Some competition is always healthy.

The only question is: Is India actually willing to allow that?

Given that SAARC is a non-military group, I think it is worthy to at least consider the option of China joining SAARC rather than treating China as a boogyman. I mean seriously, it is getting old and boring.
