Keep US out of Kashmir, says Pak Jamiat chief

In his bright tasseled turban, Pakistani cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman, is at ease in India. And it is no surprise that India grants him visas, allows him to move freely and even gives him an audience with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Rehman heads the Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Fazlur (JUI-F), which —under his father Mufti Mahmood's leadership — had once opposed the creation of Pakistan.

In contrast to most anti-Indian Islamists, Rehman exhorts for better ties between the two neighbours. "India and Pakistan should guard against American mediation in Kashmir," he said on Saturday at a luncheon by Rajya Sabha MP Mahmood Madni.

A US cable from Wikileaks describes Rehman as "more a politician than a mullah", and "one who has denounced terror attacks, but prefers to use negotiations rather than military force against militants".

Rehman is very much in the mainstream Pakistani politics. He is in the religious mainstream, but not particularly radical — he's not just an Islamist but a politician with a national profile.

Despite all that, Rehman —who represents the Deobandi school of thought — expresses little regret over the assassination of liberal politician Salman Taseer and vowed to defend Pakistan's blasphemy laws. "Taseer called it a black law, which is blasphemy in itself. Since there was no action against him, there was anger," Rehman said.

Normalcy in Pakistan hinges on the exit of the Americans from Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said.

Rehman met PM Singh on Friday, leading an entourage compromising senators Moulana Muhammad Sherani and Khalid Soomro, former chief minister of KPK province, Muhammad Akram Khan Durrani, parliamentary leader in senate Maulana Gul Naseeb Khan and former federal minister Moulana Atta-ur-Rehman.

“Peace is a long journey that should not be abandoned. Destinations cannot be reached in its first few steps,” he says.

This isnt the first time i guess when a pkistani politician has contradicted pak gov.
Btw hbs guy u r on a roll today!!!!

FYI he is not really a national figure but a local one, restricted to some areas of Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa and Balochistan.

Its the pak govt which keeps on insisting for mediation from US, china in kashmir dispute. we have always maintained that all disputes to be resolved peacefully.

I share your thoughts man
I wish everyone comes off the high horse

problem is the deadlock . but rest assured we will definitely reach a solution acceptable to all parties involved (Kashmiris, India, Pakistan) Musharaf & Manmohan already worked on it and made progress without US and if we believe Musharraf’s word, India and Pakistan were very close to a resolution.

Never mind, at least this was a start and we will get there. Pakistan is a smaller weaker country and naturally look for support from others but I see the danger here.

The risk of involving USA is that what if it decides to become a monkey and eats all the bread? The bread being the water resource, American companies are slowly and secretly starting establishing themselves around the world near the natural water resources.

It might be hard to fathom for some Indians who are flying a high horse of invincibility here due to their inflated egos but imagine a possibility that the people of the subcontinent are forced to buy drinking water only in the form of bottles sold by the likes of Avion and Nestle etc.

I have worked in GE (which you know has investments in everything major) and during one meeting our finance director was talking about GE’s intentions about investing in water industry in the subcontinent. And I started thinking that there we go.. maybe in next 50 to 100 years we will be forced to buy drinking water in their branded water bottles. (in case water from the rivers becomes contaminated)

Maybe both countries need a bit more time to mature, we did try after 60 years maybe we need a bit more time to try it again and approach a solution. Well Europe did, which has even worse past of blood & genocide, why cant we?

We can all laugh it off for now but I don’t think our next generations would find it funny.
