KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Monday he planned to hold a loya jirga, to decide the countrys peace strategy after the killing of peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Karzai made the comments in a televised address to the nation broadcast on state television after his spokesman said the president was reviewing his strategy for negotiations with the Taliban following Rabbanis death.
In a traditional loya jirga, will be held soon, the representatives of Afghanistan will be asked (about the situation) and we will do according to their wishes, Karzai said.
Rabbani was assassinated at his Kabul home last month by a turban bomber who was thought to be a peace emissary from the Taliban.
A statement released by Karzais presidential palace Sunday said new evidence showed that Rabbanis killer was a citizen of Pakistan.
Afghan officials have also charged Rabbanis murder was planned by the Afghan Talibans leadership body, the Quetta Shura, in Pakistan. But the militant group has not claimed responsibility for the killing.
