KARACHI: While the Sindh government has extended the special powers of the Rangers for the next three months and directed the paramilitary force to eliminate no-go areas in Karachi, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah reviewed the law and order situation in the city and the outcome of measures taken by the law-enforcement agencies to maintain peace.
According to a notification issued by the Sindh home department on Thursday, under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 1997, the Rangers have been given such powers for three more months to assist in the restoration of peace in Karachi.
The Home Department sources said that the Rangers have also been given powers to open fire in self-defence. They have been given the authority to conduct searches without warrants, eliminate no-go areas and take action against target-killers and exortionists. Rangers have also been given the authority to use power to deal with terrorists.
Agencies add: Chairing a high-level meeting, Qaim Ali Shah expressed his satisfaction over the ongoing operation in Karachi. Among others Interior Minister Rehman Malik also attended the meeting.
Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah also called on Qaim Ali Shah and discussed political situation in Sindh. Rehman Malik said police and Rangers have arrested various suspects on different charges during surgical action in different areas of the city. He said targeted operation was underway against the criminals. He said police and Rangers conducted 84 raids and arrested 90 suspects from different areas.
A spokesman for the CM announced calling an all parties conference (APC) over the Karachi situation on Friday; however, later Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon rejected the announcement saying no decision had been taken thus far.
Memon said: Parties will be called for a meeting and briefed on the ongoing operation in Karachi. Addressing a press conference, Memon said 165 suspected outlaws had been arrested during the last two days in surgical operation. He said the government could not give any timeframe for completion of action against criminals, but it would continue till elimination of miscreants.
He asked people to lodge their complaints against criminals activities at the complaint cell at telephone numbers 021-99202026, 021-99202065 and Fax No. 021-99202029.Sharjeel advised channels not to broadcast movement of law-enforcement agencies because it alerts the miscreants. He told a questioner that no torture cell was found so far in any part of the city.
