A new report suggests that Jordan has rejected US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s call on Amman to join an Arab military coalition against Iran, arguing that it is not going to fan the flames of tension in the region any more.

The report by Alkhaleej Online, quoting sources close to the Jordan government, said the US has requested Jordan on several occasions to join the alliance which is going to be built up in the next couple of weeks against the Islamic Republic and Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement.

“The negative response by the Jordanian government to Pomepo’s request has been resolute and decisive,” Alkhaleej Online said.

According to the report, given its bad experience of war on Syria which had serious fallouts, Jordan has no intention to join any regional or international alliance in the future.

“Meanwhile, Jordan has told the US officials that the country is set to improve its relations with all of the neighbouring states. Meanwhile, Jordan plans to mediate between the Houthis and Yemen’s former government to protect Yemenis’ interests,” the report added.

Earlier, Jordanian Foreign Minister Kamel Abu Jaber announced that his country is revising its regional and international stances to better protect its national interests. To this end, he said, Jordan has no plan to join any new alliance in the future.

In an interview with Alkhaleej Online on Jordan’s ties with Iran, Hamed Al-Kharisha, Head of Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan, said Amman has always sought to improve relations with the regional states but “we should also take into account the country’s relations with the US. In overall, Jordan is trying to establish a new framework without entering any new regional alliance.”

He went on to say that Jordan has reached the conclusion that economic interests are more important compared with political issues. “Jordan is seeking to play the role of a regional firefighter and do whatever in its power to prevent regional tensions like what we see in Yemen and Syria.”

Al-Kharisha underlined that Jordan is against any anti-Iran policies and said Amman is seeking to normalize its ties with the regional states.

Jordan recently called for returning its ambassador to Qatar after recalling him under the pressure of Saudi Arabia last year. A former deputy prime minister has also called for improving ties with Tehran.

U.S.: ‘Arab NATO’ Needed to Stop Iran

Is a common enemy enough to unite these divided nations?

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for the creation of an “Arab nato” on December 11. The announcement was made in an attempt to emphasize the commitment of the United States to the security of the region. The Arab confederation would replace the U.S. as the police of the Middle East.

What is the purpose of this plan? What is standing in its way? And will it become a reality?

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an alliance between 29 nations against aggression from Russia and other powers. The Arab version, the proposed Middle East Strategic Alliance (mesa), would need a degree of unity between Arab nations. The primary goal of this U.S. initiative would be to unify the region against an aggressive Iran.

The group would consist of Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Bahrain’s minister of foreign affairs said last year that an Arab nato would become a reality by 2019.

Lt. Gen. Joseph Guastella Jr., commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, said that Iran continues to “act as a destabilizing agent across this region” and is aiming “to disrupt the balance of power.”

Referring to Iran’s military drills last month near the Strait of Hormuz, Guastella said, “Their actions are directly aimed to threaten all of our economies.”

According to a White House spokesperson, “mesa will serve as a bulwark against Iranian aggression, terrorism, extremism” while providing “stability to the Middle East.”

“It is an American idea that has been approved by the Arab Gulf countries, but it didn’t take shape yet,” said Maj. Gen. Hamad bin Abdullah Khalifah, commander of the Royal Bahraini Air Force. “I expect such a nato to be successful, but we are still at the beginning.”

He stated that the Arab nations have been “sharing information” and “have been training alongside with the Gulf countries through joint exercises.”

Unity between Egypt, Jordan and the six Gulf Cooperation Council nations faces several challenges. Each nation operates a different military platform, making data sharing and defense coordination a logistical challenge.

But the larger blockade is Qatar’s relationship with other Gulf nations. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the U.A.E. cut relations with Qatar in June 2017, implementing a land, air and maritime blockade against the tiny nation. Al-Jazeera reported:

In all probability, mesa will not come to fruition despite the extent to which the U.S. administration supports the creation of this anti-Iranian alliance of Arab states. The blockade on Qatar, Oman and Kuwait’s unease with Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E.’s increasingly aggressive foreign policy, and lingering tensions between Egypt and Saudi Arabia over the Syrian crisis, among other issues, will continue to be major stumbling blocks.

Despite the challenges, Bible prophecy says that an Arab confederation will exist. Are we witnessing the early stages of a prophesied Arab confederation?

A prophecy in Psalm 83 lists several moderate Arab states in an end-time alliance against the modern descendants of ancient Israel. The Anchor Biblesays, “History transmits no record of the national crisis when the nations enumerated in this psalm formed a league to wipe out Israel ….” Lange’s Commentary states, “The 10 nations who are here enumerated as being combined against Israel are never mentioned elsewhere as enemies allied at the same time and for the purpose of annihilating Israel.”

In a June 2003 article from our sister publication, the Trumpet, titled “A Mysterious Alliance,” Watch Jerusalem editor in Chief Gerald Flurry wrote:

This will be a deceitful alliance. “They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance” (Psalm 83:4). Their goal is to utterly destroy Israel—including America and Britain!

Verses 5-8 read, “For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.” The identity of the nations are proved through the Bible and by tracing their migration.

The warlike Assyrians recorded in the Bible (beginning in the 1500s b.c.) later migrated to the southern shores of the Black Sea (500s b.c.), then Scythia (400s b.c.), then Central and Western Europe (by the 200s b.c.). When the Romans encountered them around this time, they referred to them as Germani, “war men.” Thus, the ancient Assyrians became the people of modern-day Germany.

The Hagarenes were a semi-nomadic people, distinct from the Ishmaelites, who lived in the desert region northeast of Ammon and Moab, modern-day Jordan. The Hagarenes settled between the lands of Gilead, Bashan and the River Euphrates. In the 700s b.c., they are mentioned as living in the same region, which is now known as Syria.

In the Bible, the descendants of Esau are known as Edom, and one of his grandsons was named Teman. In the 500s b.c., the Edomites fled their ancestral lands near Mount Seir north into Central Asia. They adopted the language of the Mongoloid Turks and migrated to Asia Minor, where they built an empire with a similar name to Teman: Ottoman. The empire fell after World War i and became the nation of Turkey. (For more information, read our articles on the biblical identity of the modern descendants of Germany, Syria and Turkey.)

Mr. Flurry continued:

Here are the modern names of these nations, as taught at Ambassador College under Herbert W. Armstrong: Edom—Turkey; Ishmaelites—Saudi Arabia; Moab—Jordan; Hagarenes—anciently dwelt in the land known as Syria today; Gebal—Lebanon; Ammon—also Jordan.

Some enemies of Israel, like Iran and Iraq, are not mentioned in this alliance. This is because the alliance turns against Israel after it has already helped destroy Iran (see Daniel 11:40-42).

It is also important to note that the United States is not in this alliance. Under the Obama and Trump administrations, the U.S. has been slowly withdrawing from the Middle East. The U.S. initiative to form an Arab natois simply an attempt to find a way to replace U.S. intervention in the Middle East. Under the Trump administration, the U.S. is becoming more and more isolationist.

The U.S. will continue to withdraw from the Middle East, ceding more power to the moderate Arab nations. Watch for the unity between these nations to strengthen against their common enemy.

and by their actions they will push iran into a corner and leave them no option but to

That is not how it works. For countries like Iran, the nuclear option (if they choose to attain it) is a defensive second strike measure, developed to thwart decapitation strikes or regime change plots. It is not an offensive capability that is viewed as a viable or probable first strike option.

Sensible decision by the Jordanian king. He seems to be rational to not get involved into fights that are not his. Whether or not he agrees with Iranian politics, maintaining cordial or neutral ties with as many as possible should be the aim.

I wont be surprised if at the end only UAE and KSA remain in the alliance. Cuz its stupid... Iran will end these stupid arabs.. Weapons dont fight wars Men do.

Arabs have best of weapons but lowest caliber men in armed forces. While iranians have sub standard weapons in comparison but men really know how to fight and lead.

I am an arab myself. Born in pakistan. I hate to see tuem fight among each other . But the stupid leadership of KSA and UAE will ruin it for the arabs .. Iran can win easily.

But who benefits from muslims fighting among each other? Israeliz and americans benefit from muslims makimg each other weak and fighting among each other. Stupid muslims of 2019 .. They even dont know what their faith is and what it means.

Muslims by name facists by actions.

Trump won't last through next year. He'll be out of office come January 2021. His approval is below 40. His disapproval is above 55. The Jordan king is wise not to depend on Trump and ruin relation with Iran. Smart man.

Why is UAE so anti Iran? I thought they are supposed to be tolerant.
They are little puppet of KSA. They even call themselves the little brother of the KSA-UAE family.

It's cute!

Typically Dubai is more pro-neutral relations with Iran, but Sharjah etc are more closer to Saudi, and the leadership in recent years has gone totally pro-KSA and anti-Iran.

Although 5-10% of UAE's population is Iranian and UAE still does a lot of trade with Iran (not sure how much now with sanctions, but I think some).
