What's new

JMSDF's Commissioning of SS-504 Zuiryu

Our Chinese friends are always going on about how their Type 095 are comparable to the Virginia's. Well here comes the first of the new block! I wonder how the 095's will compare with this beast?

It's hard to say, but I've read comments from defense experts that compare Chinese subs to the early LA class. Admiral Greenert has said twice this year at defense forums that we "own the undersea domain." He emphasized that involves more than just subs. With the recent large purchase of Virginia subs, it leads me to believe that the Virginia class program has been very successful.

I too have seen them compared with the early LA's, but I have also seen them compared with the Sierra III, which sucked. Who knows for certain? But I would still caution against anyone comparing Russian or Chinese boats to those of the Americans.

Next time we tango together, okay, my Chinese friend @cnleio ;)
I believe a good sub must has a clean & smooth skin of silencing tiles on the surface, better than Russia Kilo's rough & ugly skin.

Tell the truth, China 039C AIP at most reach Japan Oyashio-class sub still behind current Soryu-calss, future next-class AIP (above CG) will decrease sub gap.

A well constructed vessel can make use of even the most ugly of skin, the Kilo's are a great testament to this, but the 039c is definitely one great looking machine. I've seen that certain nuke boats remain only in Chinese waters, the reasons are speculative at best, but will the rise of a more capable PLAN AIP sub force finally push the nukes out of Chinese waters and into a more force projection role?

Kilo Class Subs are for the..working man. he he.

or comparing a Nissan Rogue vs Lexus RX300

:)

I prefer to look at the Kilos as being similar to a bicycle. Not a modern design, though they have been improved throughout the years, but when used properly no one will ever hear you coming. It's a great, but old design and if the US navy was willing to call these ships "a black hole", I shutter to think of the capabilities of the Soryu and 039.

Weren't they (kilo class) the ones that sounded like washing machines? (According to an American SSN commander)

Yes, last month a PLAN 039 sub docked in Sri Lanka port ... and last week i just read CCTV news reported China 094 nuclear sub cruising in Indian Ocean. It looks like this year PLAN AIP/Nuclear subs sailed to the Blue Sea.

Do you have a link to that quote? The kilos have always been super quite and I doubt US commanders would use such a description of them. The Alphas, Sierra or Deltas maybe as all are more noisy, and nuclear, but the kilos... i have my doubts.

I wish I could have been in Sri Lanka to see the 039a in person, very interesting looking though. The 039a is very "squashed" looking with its blunted front section, the 039c is much better looking with its more rounded frontal section. Still, all the best to the PLAN and may they continue with their peaceful rise, no matter how much we may question their intentions. Great to see out Chinese friends getting out of the neighborhood and visiting the rest of the world. May the US and Chinese navies find cooperation and never conflict.

It was here that i read, and some other forums:

Just wanted to know myself if it was true.

The only instance of such a quote that I came across was on the comment section of an RT article, but that's hardly a representative view of how the US navy thinks. The kilos are an older design, similar to the 209, but they are still much more quiet than even our most modern of nuke boats. The Virginia's are great and i am delighted that we are producing more and upgrading the older ones but as capable as they are the AIP boats of the world will give our sailors nightmares.

Depends on the foiling, the problem with it is that if its damaged, it emits their signals. Unfortunately for the PLAN, the majority of their subs are quite noisy, actually. And they're easy to find. We've tracked them regularly...

I've read into the improved version of the Virginia Class. Those will definitely have reduced signals, but with the same lethal capabilities. And I hear the USN is to build 30 ships of this class.
