Dhaka, July 14 (UNB) – Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad died while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital on Sunday morning.

He breathed his last at 7:45am, said Rezaul Shamim, an assistant director of ISPR.

The former military strongman had been shuttling between his home and hospital for the last few months as his health condition deteriorated.

Ershad, also the Leader of the Opposition Leader in Parliament, had captured power in 1982 when he was the army chief and declared himself the President the next year. He later formed the Jatiya Party and won the controversial election of 1986.

The military dictator was ousted through a mass uprising in the early ‘90s.

Inna-Lillahey wa Inna-Elaihey Raji'un.

Although he led a controversial life - let Allah be the final arbiter of his deeds. He was certainly loved by many and left many well wishers.

May he Rest in Peace.

At least upon his death, these media could have showed some respect. look at the report. full of negativity.

Ershad was a military dictator, but a mild one. he was no Pinochet or Gaddafi. His record of attacking the opposition parties was milder than the later so called 'Democratic regimes' under AL and BNP. Upon facing mass uprising, he stepped down without much bloodshed or harming the country. Still our media is not forgiving to him. Although these hypocrite media always supported Ershad's alliance with Hasina. In that case, he was good.

Very few opposition leader activist died or detain during his tenure as president t / dictator compare to the so called democratic govt. of hasina . May Allah forgive his wrong and place him to Jannat .
BTW i think you should edit the thread title and add former president .

I don't trust the Bangladeshi media, they do what is necessary to tow the govt. line and then whatever pleases their audience.

Ershad fooled around a lot, but as you mentioned, never pursued the vendetta oriented philosophy of the two Begums. IMHo, Ershad Chacha will be missed. A fashionable and relatively active administrator...

Good riddance. may this bastard burn in hell.

Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihy rajiun! He was a good man, and someone who started building the foundation of a better and developed Bangladesh. May his soul enter in heaven!

Why, because he worked for poor and other common folks? By the way, no civilised people should have enmity with a dead man. Enmity with dead and dead body is purely savage work.

Yes that's true. And surprisingly BNP didn't send any condolence. Rijvi the mad man said that they have no time, as they are busy with their leader khaleda's beil activities.

Although they are literally taking no steps apart from big talk. It's proven now that BNP doesn't have slightest courtesy. They are no better than pigs. Well the pigs also haven't sent condolence to their former General secretary Abdul Mannan bhuiya, same for the Eazuddin Ahmed, their former president. They expelled their another president and one of the founding leader Mr B Chawdhury, because he had slight disagreement. They said, " if a leaf fall from the oak tree, oak tree doesn't get harmed". So where is the oak tree now? Dying I see.

@Homo Sapiens, I am wondering why the pigs ( BNP) even got support from Bangladeshi people. Only low life pigs can support a pig party and it's ideology, IMHO. So if we want solid democracy in future, we must minus the pigs from Bangladeshi politics. Filty f.ucking pigs.

Although I do not like how close AL is to India, they are miles better than BNP when it comes to both the economy and military.

I believe AL will solve the problem. Honestly I never feel that AL is under Indian influence. But nowadays all are just their political tricks. And also Bangladesh want friendship to others and no enmity. So I don't blame AL totally for this Indian influence. Former filthy oppositions were more responsible for their stance.

However there should be no comparison between BNP and AL. AL can be compared with BNP supporters only ( they will caste massive vote against any party other than AL so terrorist BNP shouldn't be a case here. ) , so yes, I agree, AL is miles ahead of BNP supporters.

As for BNP ( read khaleda and Tareq) , they are terrorists and the enemy of Bangladesh. So no comparison should be made with terrorist BNP with AL or with any other sane political parties.
