It is reported that the country will now focus its efforts on winning the next possible bid in 2032
MOSCOW, January 22. /TASS/. The Japanese government has privately reached the conclusion that the Tokyo Olympics will have to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Times reported, citing its sources in the Japanese cabinet.
According to the source, the government is now wrangling over announcing the cancellation without hurting Tokyo’s chances to hold the games again. "No one wants to be the first to say so but the consensus is that it’s too difficult. Personally, I don’t think it’s going to happen," the source underlined.
It is reported that the country will now focus its efforts on winning the next possible bid in 2032.
Earlier, member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Dick Pound said that the committee has no plans to scrap the games in Tokyo in an interview with Kyodo.
The Tokyo Olympics was originally planned to be held between July 24 and August 9, 2020. However, the pandemic prompted the decision to reschedule the event to 2021, retaining the Tokyo 2020 brand.
In June, the Tokyo games organizational committee officially spoke in favor of simplifying the format of the event. The Olympic budget shot up due to additional costs relating to the postponement of the games and measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, now standing at $15.9 billion.
