USA has been making moves in Belarus (sanctioning Lukashenko) and military build up in Eastern Europe. A dispute over the southern Kuril islands would be another sore point to pressure Russia. These islands are rather far from China so China will probably be no help.

I think the majority of Japanese prefer to be "sidekick" to the cowboy USA in its adventures to conquer the world. They would definitely prefer this path than reapproaching with China even as an equal power. And there is little chance China could entertain Japan as an equal power since it means Japan would need to be a nuclear power, P5 member and project power into East China Sea (Diaoyutai).

RF sovereignty over Kuriles cannot be subject to revision – aide

MOSCOW, February 7 (Itar-Tass) - Russia’s sovereignty over South Kurile Islands is not subject to revision, presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko said on Monday.

According to the Kremlin press service, commenting on the reaction on Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s statement saying the trip to the Kurile Islands by the Russian president “is impermissible disrespect”, Prikhodko said: “If the words by the Japanese head of government are transmitted exactly, probably he is to prepare for a difficult period: such ‘humiliations’ in Japan’s logics and the Russian president’s working trips in our view will continue.”

“By visiting any region of the Russian Federation, the head of state solves the key tasks to meet the interests of Russian citizens. He is not needed any consent. Moreover, Russia’s sovereignty over Kurile Islands is not subject to revision either today or tomorrow,” the presidential aide stressed.

Tokyo rejects Moscow’s proposal to create free econ zone on Kuriles

TOKYO, February 8 (Itar-Tass) - Japan’s government on Tuesday officially rejected Moscow’s proposal to create a free economic zone on the Kuriles.

“If its precondition is preservation of Russia’s administrative rights, this contradicts our position,” the Cabinet of Ministered said in a letter of reply to one of parliamentarians.

Moreover, the Cabinet said Japan received no official proposal from Moscow for the creation of a free trade zone.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev voiced this idea in a live television interview last December.

“Nothing brings us closer than economic cooperation,” Medvedev said calling on Japan to create a single economic zone and a free trade zone on the Kuriles.

good reminder, they want to be equal powers? no way. the best case is where we replace the role of the US in managing Japan. We should be much better managers than the white man.

History also says that they were useless piles of volcanic rock lying uninhabited in the middle of the ocean about half way between Japan and Taiwan which no one cared for or claimed till Japan claimed them in 1880 and tried commercial fishing based on these islands.

History also says that after WW-II, USA administered these islands till 1972 and then returned them to Japan.

Russian Embassy in Japan confirms receiving envelope with bullet

TOKYO, February 8 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian Embassy in Tokyo confirmed on Tuesday that it had received a rifle bullet in an envelope.

"We can confirm the fact of receiving a bullet, mailed by unidentified persons," an Embassy official told Itar-Tass, "we believe the ultra-right forces or mentally unstable people are behind it. We've informed police about the incident and the local secret services are investigating this unfriendly act."

Earlier, Tokyo-based media outlets reported that an envelope containing a rifle bullet and the letter demanding the return of the northern territories" had been delivered to the Russian diplomatic mission.

The Japanese police have launched an investigation of what they believe to be "possible intimidation."

According to the police, the paper attached to the bullet runs the phrase "the northern territories are our land."

The Embassy reported that it had received the envelope on Monday night. The sender's name is not indicated. The letter was mailed in the Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo.

On Monday, the Russian Embassy told Itar-Tass that it was sending a note of protest to the Japanese Foreign Ministry in connection with the actions by the radicals near the Embassy on Northern Territories Day, including the desecration of the Russian flag.

Last December, a vial with liquid marked "poisonous" was delivered to the Russian Embassy. The sender was an activist of an ultra-right organization. The police promised to investigate the incident.

As in previous years, Japanese radicals staged noisy rallies around the Russian Embassy in Tokyo on February 7, to mark the so-called Northern Territories Day. The rallies were held in the presence of police and the Japanese security service that were on hand to prevent undesirable outcomes. Regrettably, the Japanese side was unable to ensure the normal functioning of the Embassy in violation of the Vienna convention.

This created problems for people entering or exiting the diplomatic mission, including Embassy personnel and members of their families. "In actual fact, the Embassy was blocked for quite a long time," a Russian diplomat said.
