12 vessels, for as much as $40 billion? wow that means $3.3 billion a piece.
for the price, the aussie can buy US nuclear subs. 9,100 tons seawolf class.

I think it's all deal's price which include maintain, some technology transfer, training ..., not split price per single vessel.
German offer was cheaper to compare to Japan.
 
Nuclear subs have their advantages and conventional subs have their advantges. Japanese Soryu subs might not have the endurance of a nuclear sub but it is so much more silent that for the purpose of a regional conflict, it is the superior choice.
