India today hoped that its strategic partnership with Japan would deepen further to build an edifice for peace and stability in Asia, as Tokyo sought expansion of areas of bilateral cooperation to deal with the growing menace of piracy and terrorism.

The two sides exchanged their views on these issues during a meeting between visiting Minister of State for Planning, Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Ashwani Kumar and Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.

During the meeting, Kumar expressed sympathies on behalf of the people of India for the Fukushima nuclear disaster of March this year following a massive earthquake and tsunami and voiced the country's solidarity with Japan.

He expressed the hope that India and Japan would together deepen their strategic partnership so as to build an edifice for peace and stability in Asia, an official statement said.

Kumar informed the Japanese side that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has ordered a comprehensive reinforcement of safety measures in India's nuclear power plants and added that India is prepared to move in this regard consistent with Japan's policies.

On his part, Gemba said the two countries should enlarge the areas of cooperation and together secure the safety of the sea lanes against piracy and terrorism so as to ensure maritime security and the security of energy supplies of both India and Japan.

He also stated that Japan supports the call for reform of the UN and multilateral institutions to reflect the new realities.

India is looking forward to the visit of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to the country in December and Kumar hoped that the strategic dialogue between the two countries will precede the annual summit meeting.

Kumar said that India remains committed to a fair and non-discriminatory non-proliferation regime and expressed appreciation for Japan's support to India in the Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) for its civil nuclear energy programme.

He also proposed establishment of an Indo-Japan Science Centre in India.

The two ministers exchanged notes on the ways to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries to further deepen their multifaceted engagement.

Gladly. Why not? If it gets rid of pesky pirates and loony terrorists then anything. However, I am not sure about Japanese counter terrorism skills. While they have the fanciest of weapons, fighting terror has never been exactly about shiny weapons. It is more to do with brute force and ruthless cunning combined. Japan has been out of any action for 6 decades now. Their Army is just for emergencies and national disasters.

No doubt they are fearless soldiers but they will need some crash courses to polish their samurai spirit of combat and ferocity. I am sure Ghatak units can do that easily. They're the most ruthless units fighting terrorism in J&K. I'd be happy to see Japanese forces train with Ghataks.

Since they are in th US's camp and see Chinese as their threat, not only those shiny toys but their training level must also be high. I guess they get trained along with US[Correct me if wrong], so their standards must be world class IMO.

No doubt about Ghataks especially as they are now getting a massive UPG. But I think RR being the premier dedicated CI force of IA are the ones who could show the Japs a thing of two. They are considered by many armies including many western armies as the best CI force anywhere on earth. Also IA has some of the best training institutions in the world- CIJWS, HAWS, NDA, IMA etc.

That is fine in a conventional war where you know who the enemy is. In Jihad, anyone can be the enemy. How do they hunt them down? If Japan was to be stationed in Afghanistan, its entire battalion would be flattened in a matter of hours. Proxy war is very different from conventional warfare as you know and the maximum of this kind is faced and known to us. Heck! it was king Shivaji who is credited with its creation and further refined by Gurkha groups as well :P (most modern spec ops use refined versions of what his Maratha squads invented). So historically, it is an Indian expertise.

Japanese have been rusty without action for half a century. They will need some serious crash course.

No doubt US training is top notch but what we've learnt is from solid experience and some serious losses of life. Nothing beats a situation as live as that. Fighting ragtag terrorists in himalayan ranges ain't easy man. Most of Western military tech is useless in those mountains. Its been proven already. There it is just man vs man with nature in the backdrop.

You bet. My cousin would always complain of the nightmarish training he'd received in the MARCOs. They're trained for all types of terrains and all types of situations. In short, they've to survive the worst: Mizoram Academy of Jungle Warfare. That's the worst thing any armed forces could throw at any soldier. If anyone can last there and come out with his mind in one piece, he can handle anything... let alone talibunnies and Jihadis.

Nice.Japan represents the kind of ally India should be interested in for the long run. There's much we can learn from each other.

I think we should join hands with them in many projects. Japan is also developing a 5th gen fighter jet, we can build the related techs together. We can also join hands with them in MBT, warship design, UAV or UCAV and NBC related defence countermeasures.
