Jamaat planned to go violent for bucking up party men, giving good account of itself to govt, allies

Rashidul Hasan

Jamaat-e-Islami's violent showdown in the capital and elsewhere in the country on Monday reflected the party's newly adopted policy of boosting the morale of its activists demoralised due to the arrest of top leaders of the party on war crimes charges.

"The showdown and anti-government agitation will certainly boost our activists' morale and also increase our organisational strength,” Jamaat lawmaker ATM Shamsul Islam told The Daily Star yesterday.

From now on, the intensity of Jammat's agitation against the government will increase day by day, Shamsul Islam said.

Jamaat insiders said the party believes it is high time to show the ruling Awami League its strength and to create pressure on the government to stop the move to try top Jamaat leaders on charges of war crimes. The show of strength will also remind Jamaat's ally BNP of its importance, they added.

Jamaat is a major component of the BNP-led four-party alliance.

Asked, Jamaat's Assistant Secretary General Mujibur Rahman said, “This demonstration of strength has benefited our leaders and activists. It is true that many of them have been arrested following this. But it will intensify the anti-government agitation".

He also said staging of a big showdown was also necessary ahead of the September 27grand rally of the four-party in the capital. It will help gear up preparations for the rally.

Jamaat suffered a debacle in the last parliamentary polls in which it got only two seats.

Talking to this correspondent earlier, several Jamaat leaders said arrest of their five top leaders including party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed was a major blow to the party. It was the worst crisis the party faced since its inception, they said.

Following the arrest of these leaders, Jamaat's agitation programme was limited to issuing press releases, and bringing out small processions and holding rallies mostly near the party's city unit office at Naya Paltan.

But on Monday, hundreds of activists of Jamaat and pro-Jamaat student body Islami Chhatra Shibir fought pitched battles with police and set fire to their vehicles.

Asked about this, Jamaat leader Mujibur Rahman said they cannot wait silently for long for better days to come.

He mentioned that trial of party leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee on war crimes charges has started. And it is natural party leaders and activists will go tough on it, he added.[SUP][/SUP]

Nearly 100 people, including 50 policemen, were injured as activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami fought pitched battles with the police and torched scores of vehicles in the city on Monday afternoon after the law enforcers intercepted the party’s protest march.

About 20 vehicles, including four police cars, were burnt and damaged during the clashes that spread across a large area from Kakrail to Shantinagar and Paltan.

Reports of clashes between the Jamaat activists and police also came from different parts of the country, including Chittagong and Comilla that left about 100 more people injured.

Leaders and activists of Jamaat took to the streets on the day in protest against the ‘conspiracy’ to try the party leaders on ‘false’ charges by using a ‘black law’ and demanding their release.

Jamaat claimed that at least 700 leaders and activists were injured and 400 were arrested across the country. Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that they had arrested 75 persons during clashes with Jamaat activists in Dhaka city.

After the clashes, the police on Monday night arrested Jamaat’s acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam at the party’s Moghbazar headquarters. Witnesses said ATM Azhar was arrested when he was coming out of the party’s central office after a press conference. Jamaat publicity secretary Tasneem Alam was also arrested along with him.

DMP Ramna zone deputy commissioner Krishnapada Roy confirmed the arrest of the Jamaat leaders.

The injured policemen were given treatment at Central Police Hospital at Rajarbagh while a number of Jamaat activists were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police in some districts foiled the Jamaat demonstrations without any major incidents by arresting its leaders and activists.

A large number of police and members of Armed Police Battalion with water cannons and armoured carriers were deployed at different places ahead of the scheduled demonstrations in Dhaka.

The capital’s Kakrail, Paltan, Bijaynagar, Shantinagar and Malibagh areas turned into virtual battlefields during the clashes that left around 100 people, including 30 police personnel injured.

Police fired several hundred shots, mostly rubber bullets, and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Jamaat activists set fire to at least 17 vehicles, including two police vans, a police jeep and a prison van during the violence. The activists also attacked buses and other vehicles and torched nine motorcycles.

Witnesses said police had charged batons and fired a barrage of tear gas shells to disperse hundreds of Jamaat activists who gathered at the Diploma Engineers Institute at Nightingale crossing at Kakrail to march towards Paltan.

But police swung into action and tried to disperse them by using batons. Soon the clashes spread out to Paltan, Bijaynagar, Fakirerpool and Malibagh areas.

Activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir confronted the police with sticks and hurled stones during the nearly two-hour clashes.

A large number of people, mostly those returning home from work, suffered as transports went off the roads and police also cordoned off the intersections at Paltan, Bijaynagar, Kakrail and Malibagh restricting movement of traffic.

The demonstrators, in the face of firing of tear gas and rubber bullets, retreated to different nearby lanes from where they hurled stones at police.

Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed in the areas during the clashes.

New Age correspondent in Chittagong reported that activists of Jamaat had vandalised several vehicles in the port city on Monday afternoon.

At least three policemen, including CMP assistant commissioner Abdul Mannan, were injured in the clashes triggered by police action on the Jamaat activists trying to stage demonstrations in Muradpur area of the port city. Police arrested a number of activists at the spot.

New Age correspondent in Comilla reported that the activists of Jamaat clashed with police for about an hour after the law enforcers stopped a procession in Chawkbazar area.

The angry demonstrators smashed windowpanes of four commercial banks and attacked buses. The police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse about 4,000 activists and arrested 11 people at the spot.

New Age correspondent in Kushtia reported that the police had arrested 26 Jamaat leaders and activists, including its district general secretary Shahjahan Ali Molla, at different places of Kushtia town on Monday evening at the end of the party’s protest programme.

New Age correspondent in Jhenaidah reported that nine Jamaat activists were arrested after a clash between the party men and police in the town.

Jamaat’s district secretary Mujammil Haque said police had attacked a

party rally triggering the clashes. At least nine activists were injured during the clash.

In Chapainawabganj the police foiled the Jamaat’s demonstration by charging baton on them. Police also arrested two leaders, said our correspondent.

In Bogra, the police dispersed Jamaat activists by charging batons when they tried to bring out a procession at Barogola. Jamaat claimed that six activists were injured during the police action, our correspondent said.

Brutality on Jamat activist during protest rally

Right now, CNG costs Tk. 400 to fill up a tank. Before, used to be 300. Last year, it was 200 "-.-

The country's situation is increasingly getting out of hand.

BNP cowards need to learn something from Jamat. This is how Awami can be straighten up. Awami only understand the language bombardment. Although I condemn the burning of public buses however it was justified to beat down Awami munafiq polices. I hope BNP wake up and do similar in coming days.

in todays strike bnp need to show their strength. in eevery strike we watched they fled in police attack and made their meeting infront of their office . to day they should overcome the police barrier and establish their democratic right .

Most Awami supporters are also Awami activists whearas most BNP supporters are common man. This is the reason BNP sucked at implementing Hartal. I suspect BNP won't do jack unless Jamatis mix up with BNP. Let see if BNP clown can do anything or they will just be good at big talk. I am fed up with their fake big mouthing.

I would like to see the Awami H@arami polices get beat up.

actually it is easy to say , difficult to do. you guys are ignorant about ground realities.... i have seen it.. whenever BNP calls for Hartal ( normally in evening 2/3 days before hartal ) police starts randomly arresting bnp activists and raiding their houses.. this continues untill the hartal finishes... So normally all the chatrodol and jubodol leaders flee after announcement of hartal... this is why you do not see any activist during hartal...

BS of superlative degree. JI leaders consciously negated the story of its supporter's so-called destruction of GOVT. properties. OTH, RAWAMYS have records of committing 'False Flag' Opps. (Mukti Bahani massacres of Biharis in Panchabibi, Jessore « Bogra « Rajshahi « Sonar Bangla « Bangladesh Patriot), (Sarmila Bose’s impartial evidence debunks 1971 rape allegations against Pakistan Army | Islamabad Times), (AWAMI JUBO LEEG Setting Fire on Bus (Part#1) [Sheikh Selim Confesses] - YouTube), (AWAMI JUBO LEEG Setting Fire on Bus (Part#2) [Sheikh Selim Confesses] - YouTube) and shifting blame on opposition. Seeing anti-current and measuring people's pulse, my best guess was that RAWAMYs did it to implicate JI-Shibiries in its sinister plan to ban JI-SHIBIRIES (Daily Amardesh -????, ?????? ?? ?????????? ????, ? ?????? ????, ?? ??????? ????).
