Mediating between Iran and USA is the last thing India will do. We would rather try to mint the benefits as much as we could. Jaishankar calling Pompeo was not about any advise or information. Its the oil we are after and dont want the prices to go up. Thats it!

It's actually good that so far, India has avoided the fallout of this mess. India has vested interests in the US, Arab states, and Iran, so India's goal should be to stay out of things and continue business as usual. My guess is that is what Jaishankar told Pompeo, and the US didn't have much choice but to accept india's position.
