ISRO-enabled control room for anti-Naxal operations​

A state-of-the-art control room with giant TV screens that will help track the offensive of security forces in Naxal strongholds with satellite imaging and GPS has been activated at the CRPF headquarters in Delhi.

Official sources said the control room will enable top officers to track the movement of personnel in thick jungles and hilly terrains across states where anti-Naxal operations are on.

A giant screen comprising 16 LCD screens has been put up, which at the push of a button will show the exact positioning of troops in the area. The preloaded satellite images will give a fair idea of the patrol party's location and nearby areas.

The project was kick-started few years ago with the force approaching the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for satellite imaging of Naxal areas. The National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) is also part of the project.

"Lack of knowledge of the topography is the biggest hurdle before securitymen against its fight against the Naxals who are well-versed with the terrain," a source said.

The images outlines major details of the terrain including water bodies among others. And with the help of Global Positioning System (GPS), each step of the personnel can be tracked.

"This will be very helpful in carrying out offensive operations and also to undertake any rescue missions if any. Even if personnel take a wrong route, they can be notified," a source said.

The agencies are in the process of giving finishing touches to the project which will provide a more comprehensive imaging.

Top home ministry officials were given a presentation on the project recently.

How well our CRPF is connected ??/ I mean do they have proper communication equipments and gps ??/ I hope CRPF modernization is also given importance.

In my opinion rather than modernizing the whole army, we should modernize first the forces which are fighting on various front.

By the way CRPF comes under Home Ministry, doesn't they have any modernization plan ?/

I heard PC is working hard but i think he forgot about the modernization of the forces. How these forces can work with this 21st century technology with the WWII era weaponry.

I don't think you've fully understood the article, the control room is built ground-up for the CRPF and has nothing to do with ISRO the article only refers to ISRO to paint the picture of what the control room will look like ie a launch control room something LIKE this:

the following factors are essential for a successfull anti naxalite operation:

1. mobility
2. force deployement in right qty
3. communication
4. intelligence
5. training
i will not discuss the socio economic angle to the problem here. but GOI needs to adress these points if we want to have credible success in anti naxal operations. The CRPF is in urgent need of helicopters which can be used in both utility role and SHBOs (special heli borne operations). we need to give them good vehicles which will improve mobility and force deployment.

adequate numbers of men need to be trained in art of anti naxal operations. initial days we did suffer lot of casualties becaus the men were not aware of the tactics to counter naxals.

we are sorely lacking in the intelligence aspect vis-a-vis naxals. IB is toally concentrating of counter intelligence and anti terror intelligence. the special branch of state police is ill equipped and ill trained in intelligence. we need men who can give us credible inputs on movement/leadership of naxals. though some start has been made by successfull infiltration of naxals set up by IB lot more is required to be done.
