Israel army website lists ‘State of Judea and Samaria’, erasing West Bank

January 23, 2019

An Israeli army website has listed the “State of Judea and Samaria” as an option for recruits to list their place of birth, erasing the occupied West Bank.

The website – which belongs to the Meitav military unit that sorts new army recruits – asks new soldiers to fill out an online form before their arrival at the recruitment office. The soldiers are asked to state their mother’s country of birth by selecting from two options: the State of Israel or the State of Judea and Samaria.

Judea and Samaria is Israel’s name for the West Bank, which it has occupied since the Six Day War of 1967.

New recruits complained to the Israeli army about the designation, not because it erased the occupied West Bank and with it the estimated 2.9 million Palestinians living there, but because it implied that “Judea and Samaria” is a separate entity to Israel. One recruit, referred to only as D, told Arutz Sheva that: “It’s so absurd that on an official website operated by the [Israeli army], the distinction between the State of Israel and the State of Judea and Samaria is made, and the regions appear as two separate countries.”

An army spokesman responded to the complaints by saying that “the matter will be examined and treated as soon as possible,” though did not say whether the occupied West Bank would be named as such or whether it would be incorporated into the “State of Israel” option.

There are over 400,000 Israelis living in illegal settlements and outposts across the occupied West Bank, according to figures from Peace Now’s Settlement Watch programme. The Israeli government still considers these people Israeli citizens, meaning youth who live in illegal settlements are still required to serve in the army.

Israel’s illegal settlement of the occupied West Bank has seen a huge increase in recent years, thanks largely to the administration of US President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, it emerged that in 2018 Israel had advanced plans for an additional 5,618 settlement units. In 2017, plans were advanced to build 6,712 new settlement homes, roughly 2.5 times the 2016 level under former US President Barack Obama.

Israeli settlers have also grown increasingly violent, undertaking a series of attacks against Palestinians in recent months. In December, Israeli human rights organisation Yesh Din demanded that an investigation be opened into extreme-right-wing Knesset Member (MK) Bezalel Smotrich for social media incitement. Yesh Din asked Israel’s Attorney General, Avichai Mandelblit, to open a criminal probe into a tweet in which Smotrich called on illegal Israeli settlers to attack Palestinian vehicles on Route 60, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank. That night, scores of Israeli settler youth went to Route 60 to throw stones at passing Palestinian vehicles, forcing them to leave the road in order to avoid further damage or injury.

In October, Israeli settlers attacked and killed Palestinian mother Aisha Al-Rabi as she was driving with her husband near Tapuah Junction (Za’atara), south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank. The attackers, later revealed to be students at a Jewish seminary located on a nearby illegal settlement, were arrested by Israel’s security agency Shin Bet on suspicion of “grave terrorist offenses, including murder”. However, barely a week later, Shin Bet released all but one of the settlers “after it was decided that the investigation could continue while they were under house arrest”.

Given the state power of Israel and its quality of life...
I believe it is better for Palestinians to accept the state of Israel with their own identity and a province as well as govt representation.

I must say it is Israel's worst nightmare

Israel won't accept Palestinians in occupied West Banks as citizens .... As it is against one state solution and wants them to leave elsewhere instead. But, don't let situation in WB confuse you, it's because of Palestinian Authority that the Palestinians face this fate. Soon Hamas and IJ will topple the PA traitor Jewified scum and start executing the Israeli army and settler terrorists.

We are not afraid of Israel and can turn the situation around in the WB. Problem is PA cooperating with Israel to arrest all Palestinians who prepare military action against IDF occupiers in the West Bank.

The PA are not Muslim , they are committing a huge crime unforgivable sin in Islam. Nonviolence doesn't work, PA tried it for 30-40 years and now Israel is officially introducing legislation to annex the West Bank. They must allow Hamas and IJ activists to prevent this. Arresting them in cooperation with Israel is a major sin that takes you out of fold of Islam if you are harming your own people like that and assisting the enemy in usurping more of our land.

We have a bunch of apostates in our community who run to Israel and US for protection. And Israel offers them protection in return for selling out our land. Abbas and the other apostates are lucky to be alive right now.

If PA is scared then they need to get out of the way and let Hamas/IJ do the work. It will take lot of sacrifice and loss of life on our side, but it must be done. And Hamas/IJ activists don't fear sacrifice for a greater cause. Martyrdom in Islam is all about the will to sacrifice for a good cause against tough odds. Allah wants to see which among the people are willing to put their trust in him and fight for the right cause(ideally Islam). He compensates them with martyrdom if they were sincere. PA of today doesn't have enough trust in God and is too attached to life. Thus they will keep avoiding the tough decisions that have to be made.

Just outnumber Israel population wise lol, drown them

You can't, Israel encircles Palestinian towns in the WB and makes it a pain to travel, work, and so on. They also prevent Palestinians from having a normal economy and instead build their own infrastructure there to support their own economy. Thus Palestinians only can work low wage jobs and Israel hopes they just decide to migrate elsewhere. Also in the WB they only allow Jews in settlement blocs so you can't mix in their society.

Hamas and IJ would have ended the traitor apostate Abbas long ago if the consequences were minor. If they do an international military coalition will be formed to topple Hamas and IJ in Gaza and Egypt would close the borders and so on. I guarantee you though that that pathetic individual is an apostate like all other Arab leaders and they are destroying our future. I'm not gonna tell other Arabs what to do but I know us Palestinians will done with this guy if he keeps up these policies and continue asserting himself on us like a dictator.

I think if you bring an Article that contain data from the PEACE NOW movement , it is worth mentioning.

And important to understand their view point.

PEACE NOW movement movement goal is to bring about peace between Israel and Palestinians.

There are a number of parties in the Israeli parliament that have accepted many of of their ideas and many media people , politicians and other people of influence , in Israel , are working to achieve their goal of peace.

I think it would be unfair just to criticize Israel without mentioning that their are many in our country that dedicate themselves , to try and solve this conflict and bring about peace.

What you suggest is violence , which only result would be to strengthen the extremist on both side.

And if you mention PLO and Hamas . It is worth mentioning that the Palestinians not being able to speak in one voice sure does not help the Palestinian cause.

The fact that their is no one excepted by all leadership of all the Palestinian makes it much harder to find a partner that is authorized by the Palestinians to make real progress.

This is something the Palestinians can only solve for themselves.

Are you not a member here also?
So, why do you not post it (as a thread) yourself?

Settlers attacked Palestinians in one of the villages of Ramallah. The 'settler' are terrorists are sent by Israel to harass Palestinians in their land. In a calculated campaign to terrify the Palestinians in order to evict them in future and establish more illegal settlements. Palestinians protested this in their village, and the Israeli army opened fire killing one Palestinian teen. Also injuring 40 others(5 critically).
