ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, Afghanistan and China agreed on Monday to take practical steps and deepen their cooperation in security and counter-terrorism after a trilateral ‘strategic dialogue’ held in Kabul.

The first round of the strategic dialogue was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao and Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai, said a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

The three sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the situation in the region, issues of peace and security and trilateral practical cooperation. They resolved to make concerted efforts for maintaining peace and stability in Afghanistan.

China and Pakistan reiterated support for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process. Beijing and Kabul expressed their support for Islamabad to host 5th Ministerial Conference of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process in 2015.

The three parties welcomed the formation of the national unity government in Kabul and enhanced bilateral interaction between Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as increased political, security, counter-terrorism and economic cooperation.

On the sidelines of the strategic dialogue, Pakistan’s foreign secretary held bilateral meetings with Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Karzai and China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao.

During the meeting with Karzai, Aizaz Chaudhry underscored the importance Pakistan attached to a peaceful, stable, united and prosperous Afghanistan. He noted the commitment of the leadership on both sides to transform relationship with a special emphasis on political engagement, security and counter-terrorism cooperation, trade and commercial interaction, and regional cooperation.

Good to see Kabul being more involved and their willingness to get more involved.

Much greater step compared to Karzai government.

yes the new government seem to be very eager to end the Terrorism in the region , while Karzai doors were in the hands of some one else ..........so yea i agree with you .

I will be interested if any pact is signed in this case. Frankly speaking, agreeing to, MoUs, promised to, etc are all not entities in International Diplomacy until and unless any concrete steps or treaties are signed.

OHMAGAWD.......they didn't bother asking India to join in? Isn't India a vital partner for Afghanistan on paper?

Thats why I said, is anything on paper? Otherwise vocal formalities are a norm in diplomacy. Hope u understand what i mean.

I hope you do realize that Pakistan can get what it wants from Afghanistan? Hence Beijing coming in with the two?

I do realize that thats the age old desire of Pakistan which still has not materialized. I also do understand that its USA which has its claw on Afghanistan and China has no on ground role playing yet.

Its simple, China shows its desire to enter the region. USA extend further their stay. End of the day, Pakistan's dream will be dream if USA/CIA doesnt leave. Hope u realise this?

If you come out of the cave you live in, you'd realize that USA has already left. All major mining contracts are with Chinese companies. Once the USA leaves the region for good, it wouldn't have any say in the economic development of Afghanistan. Look how hurriedly they left Iraq. Same for Afghanistan, they have no interest there neither do they want added headache. Afghanistan is a done and dusted game for them. The next powerful power is China, who has built up a considerable base in Afghanistan, while the Americans were busy 'fighting' Chinese were going in for mining contracts.

This is from 2010:

So u mean USA not interested in Afghanistan's minerals? Last time I heard u saying USA attacks a country just to milk it. If theres so much to milk then why USA not competing with chinese? OR is it that they dont find those mines worth enuf?

Its so ironic that theres trillion dollors of minerals to exploit and USA not interested in it and leave it to its rivals?

Ur argument looses focus somewhr or the other.

If you think USA went in Iraq for Oil and Afghanistan for minerals.....then.....umm....this conversation is pretty much over. Because it shows you have not bothered to read and reflect on anything in the past 10 years. It's not as easy as it seems. When USA went in Iraq, people were jumping on the 'USA invading Iraq for Oil' theory......many poor PhD students published their thesis on that, many authors made some money writing books on that, some missed the party so didn't get the fame or fortune, in the end we all know, that hardly any oil contracts went to USA based companies and Iraq is in a worse mess than it was in 2002.

But dont u see ur statements are completely contradicting typical Pakistanis who earned their argument on this same logic? Indians never said that USA invaded Iraq for Oil but ya 80% Pakistanis believed strongly and still do. We all know such conspiracy theories are resident of countries like Pakistan.

Wud u accept now that Pakistanis said earlier was utter bullshit and USA invasion of Iraq was not exactly 'Invasion for Oil'?
