Libya strikes showcase French warplane

28.03.2011 @ 18:04 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Many commentators believe the Libya air strikes are a pre-election advert for President Nicolas Sarkozy. Some believe they are also an advert for France's badly-selling Rafale jet fighter.

Several EU diplomats and even one foreign minister speaking off the record in Brussels in the run-up to the Libya campaign pointed to next year's French presidential elections as a big reason for Sarkozy's enthusiasm to take on Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi.

But looking in detail at French operations in Libya, military analysts have also said that France is using the war to promote its badly-selling €60-million-per-unit Rafale fighter.

Growler Does It All Over Libya

Two years after entering squadron service, the U.S. Navy's EA-18G "Growler" electronic warfare aircraft has seen combat for the first time in Libya. The EA-18G is equipped with the ALQ-99 radar jamming pod and a a APG-79 phased array (AESA) radar, which also has some jamming capability (with the right software) as well as the ability to fry electronics.

Eurofighter's Combat Debut in Libya May Boost Sales of $106 Million Plane

Missions over Libya may spur sales of Eurofighter GmbH’s 65 million-pound ($106 million) Typhoon warplane as the enforcement of a no-fly zone against Muammar Qaddafi gives the jet a chance to prove its battle credentials.

“It never hurts to have the ‘as used in combat’ stamp,” said Francis Tusa, London-based editor of the Defence Analysis newsletter. “It can only do you good.”

OR

This is for oil?????
It seems that using the situation in Egypt US and its allies developed case against Libya to justify their doing?

^ Or just how about keeping this simple and say it is to save the Libyans who were being attacked, shelled and machine-gunned by Qaddaffi ?

so simple na?

See what you say might also be true as much as what I say can be true.

BTW Oil is definitely not the reason because Qaddafi was already supplying the oil to Europe and was molly-coddling with them. In addition he was sucessfully keeping the Chinese in check. What more can the West want ?

:rofl::rofl:

ofcourse the war on libya has no moral grounds whatsoever... its a war for oil...the ugly suited guys agreed needed more blooood.

Yes the whole world is to get the oil from the innocent Muslim lands. Typical victim mentality and refusal to see facts on hand and instead rationalizing to somehow arrive at a conclusion that is in agreement with a pre-conceived notion.

Hey Stop! This discussion is not about Muslim or whatever! This is about Nato and their objectives in Libya. If you can't argue then just shut....! I will request mods to please keep these kind of comments in check.

It has zero to do with any aircraft -- the intervention in Libya is to stop, to rob, legitimacy from the reform movements throughout the arab/muslim Middle East -- The West may mouth the idea of liberty but they know such an idea among Arabs and Muslims is a idea that is dangerous to the interests of the West and must be prevented.

Libya has nothing to rob except oil reserves!
So what do you think, script writer of whole this drama is NATO or they are just using the rebellion for their advantage?

Ever since the West and later through NATO, got involved, the whole Libyan rebellion, became discredited in the eyes of the world -- now with the news that CIA operatives are on ground and that Regime Change is the aim - all we now have is Bush Lite - instead of a smirking idiot, we have lawyerly black man with a Muslim middle name, but look the policy is the same.

It's like this - from the Western tip of North Africa, all the way to Singapore, these populations are the prize -- a prize US must win if her position in the world is to continue, if her "way of life" is to continue much as it was before - however, after having signed on to the Israel as foundation of foreign policy and Iraq and Afghanistan and now Libya, anything, absolutely anything the US touches is poison -- in fact for the US to win, it must be seen to lose but that may be a pill too bitter for policy makers to swallow. Which should tell you that these are not serious peoples and are more interested in setting fires as they retreat.

UK uses Typhoon jet in attack role for first time

Britain used the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet in active combat for the first time, a senior military official said on Wednesday. British Air Vice-Marshal Phil Osborn said the aircraft had been used on Tuesday to bomb targets over Libya, where NATO forces are attacking military assets belonging to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and enforcing a no-fly zone and arms embargo.

Would you not demand same for Kashmiris?
Whereas, Kashmiris had been machine gunned by 400'000 army men. no brutal regime or dictator can draw parallel to Indian atrocities against Muslims of India..

While rebels in Lybia are armed by heavy wepons and 4.5 generation fighter jets! and in your opinion heavy NATO bombing since last few is not killing any civilians. or may bee you are reading too much into 'The Hindu'

Fact is NATO is not fighting with Qaddafi personally, it is the national army of Libya which is fighting for their sovereignty.

See.... You Indians have nothing common with Pakistanis... so better go back to indian web sites, which are known for appreciating yearly massacres of minorities in India.
