Is such worldwide paranoia/excitement over any issue unprecedented in modern history?

Every community in every country in the world – from China to African nations, from USA to India, from Russia to Japan / Australia – seems to be deeply concerned in this issue (corona).

This has caused a global disruption in the routine of many if not most countries. For some, life has come to a standstill.

The corona issue has shook up the world (probably wrong phrase for the context but you get the point).

The question is which other event in modern history has caused such paranoia/excitement?

Not the world wars. Because only Europeans, Chinese and Japanese were interested in world wars. For South Asians and Africans – barring the recruited military personnels - it was probably business as usual.

So is the current degree of global disturbance unprecedented in modern history?

I think even during WW 2--which was the last major 'global' event, there were large areas of the world which were barely touched by the war. And information was not easy to come by those days and so hundreds of millions of people more or less remained living 'normal' lives.

This time--with the very interconnected world and with information available so quickly, the impact is far more pervasive and deeply felt than any other time in human history. And I am afraid this may not be the last time.

PS. For years, I have been wanting to get the HELL AWAY from man and his wars, environment degradation, and pestilences brought about because of man's greed for money and power. I have often thought of some remote semi-isolated island to go and live there. And perhaps I will once this crisis is over!

Very well said. Its the fact that the world is now very connected, information flow is really fast. This gives us immense advantages but now we are tasting the cons. The more worrying aspect is that this might just be the beginning.
