Is China 70 years ahead of India? A visit to Mao's home province city, Changsha

China and India are on two different planets.

China is a super power, literally building mega projects all over the world. Also is a first grade weapons exporter. China's brightest minds remain in or go back to China.

India relies on the West for most of its investments and aid for its 60%+ poor population. Needs to import even the most basic military systems. Also has its most advanced weapon systems imported from Russia with ~40% Chinese electronics. Its brightest minds prepare themselves only to go live and permanently settle in the West.

China is 50 years ahead of India, minimum

India is overhyped, its huge size gives it an illusion of superiority over other countries.

It is the only country in top 25 economies to not even have $10,000 GDP per capita, in fact it doesn't even touch $5,000

But it can source enough funds to put aside for large ticket projects due to 1b+ population

You will see amazing videos on the quality of Chinese Infrastructure

I blame democracy, but then that is the path India has chosen. We can not match the Chinese for efficiency, who are aided not just by their authoritarian one party system, but also by them not being mentally clogged by religious division as a people.

China are a fair way ahead in many aspects, not sure if they're 70 years ahead. India are ahead in other ways, more political life here, people are not state programmed collectivist bots. Politics is a lot more spicy around here.

From 1960 to 1990, India and China Were at Par. How Did It Then Overtake Us?

In 1990, India's per person income was $367, while China's was $317. By 2000, India's per person income had risen to $1,357, compared to China's $4,450.

Notice that China was slightly behind India around when both nations went into the phase that we call liberalisation. But liberalisation has not helped us replicate what they have done. China grew at 11.7% in the 1990s (versus our 5.6%), then 16.5% in the 2000s (against our 6.5%) and then 8.8% in the 2010s (versus our 5.1%). China should interest us most because China has as large a population as ours and is an Asian nation. And it was exactly as poor as us at one point in time.

The World Bank’s data shows that India’s per capita income in 1960 was $82, while China’s was $89. In 1970, we were almost even, with India at $112 and China at $113. In 1980, India was $266 and China considerably behind at $194.

In 2000, we were $1,357 and China was $4,450. In 2022, India was at $2,388 and the China at $12,720. To grow at 15% per year is an astonishing feat which we have never achieved ever, but these three nations consistently delivered it in sustained fashion over several years to escape poverty.

The World Bank defines lower middle-income nations as those where per person GDP is between $1,036 and $4,045 (at $2,200, we are lower middle-income and have been here since 2008, around when we crossed $1,000). Upper middle-income economies are those with per capita national income of between $4,000 and $12,300. China went over that, to reach $12,556 in 2021. Above this is classified as high-income.
