ARBIL: Iraqi Kurdish leader Massud Barzani called on Saturday for the right to self-determination of the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, which could lead to a breakup of the country.

Speaking at a congress of his Kurdistan Democratic Party, Barzani said "the issue of self-determination," which was considered "a right," would be presented to those attending the conference "to be studied and discussed."

Barzani's comments were made to an audience that included Iraq's Prime Minister-designate Nuri al-Maliki, parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi and Iyad Allawi, whose Iraqiya bloc won the most seats in March elections.

Maliki, who was awarded the premiership on November 25, is in the process of attempting to form a cabinet within two weeks. Barzani's KDP is a key member of Maliki's governing coalition.

Iraq's Kurdish north, made up of three provinces, has its own parliament and exerts control over all areas of policy except for national defence and foreign affairs.

the northern Iraq is already quite autonomous.....there are racial tensions between Arabs and kurts --and its worsened by the fact that kurt areas control most of the flow of oil

incidentally, they are most developed areas of Iraqi nation. Quite secure also.

talks of secession should not be accepted or even discussed.......they were never disputed territory and have always been part of Iraq

Iran Turkiye and Syria would be following this development very closely

That's right.Since our government is teh puppet of us.

The Kurds have no idea that what they are getting into, or perhaps what they are about to start. They out of every one else should know that once they declare independence the Turks are not going to sit idle. They will perhaps make a move before the new nations flag hosting ceremony could be conducted (metaphorically speaking). And we could see a tug of war between the Sunni center and Shia south, as the center is completely deprived of oil its either on the north, or the south. This also bring in a 3 sided civil war, with the Arabs, the Turks and may be even the Iranians supporting the Sunni center against the Kurds. And the Sunnis and Shies going at each other with the Arabs and the Iranians supporting their respective parties. As the Saudis have clearly indicated that they will not hesitate in sending in the support the Sunnis would need, that could be any option. The Iranians might not get that liberty of sending in the troops due to the foreign forces present. But the situation cannot be labeled any thing short of being a disaster, not just for Iraq but the whole region. But I think the biggest losers will be the Kurds them selves, who will have it really hard to find a supporting party in the region. As all immediate neighbors, Syria, Turkey and Iran have a substantial Kurdish population and they would find it really hard to digest an independent nation right next door that could create more unrest with in their respective provinces.

I hope the NATO wont make the mistake of treating "Kurdistan" like a liberated Kosovo

just because Kurds are pro-US

Sir ji that is exactly the point I made in the lambi si taqreer I posted. :D
That if they let the Kurds do what the kurds want then the countries with substantial Kurdish pop in the map bellow wont be that pleased.
