Sorry to jump in but i don't believe Islam allow to kill people for not paying Zakat! there's no such advice in Quran.
There were wars in past times, because Islam had existential threat.
Today even Hindus know about Quran, point is... in current times, every one keep his /her religion by personal choice. There are many people in Pakistan, who are born to Muslim parents but choose to be Agnostics or Atheists. We can't punish them for sake of some conflicting history, and call it Sharia.
If there's a war today, it will be for political reasons, geographical reasons or personal reasons.

The point is that for rebellion and other serious crimes, there is a long history of harsh punishment in Islam.

I don't know for sure, what was on plate for Abu Bakar RA in his short lead time and what was his reaction.
