Iran’s only female Olympic medalist reportedly defects
yesterday

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s only female Olympic medalist said she defected from the Islamic Republic in a blistering online letter that describes herself as “one of the millions of oppressed women in Iran.”

Taekwondo athlete Kimia Alizadeh posted the letter on Instagram as Iran’s semiofficial ISNA news agency said she had fled to the Netherlands. She criticized wearing the mandatory hijab headscarf and accused officials in Iran of sexism and mistreatment.

“Whatever they said, I wore,” Alizadeh wrote in the letter posted Saturday. “Every sentence they ordered, I repeated.”

She described the decision to leave Iran as difficult, but necessary.

There was no immediate reaction from Iranian authorities. ISNA said Alizadeh had been reported injured and unable to compete. Their report suggested Alizadeh may try to compete under another nation’s flag at the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.

Alizadeh, 21, won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Her defection comes amid unprecedentedly high tensions between Iran and the United States.

In recent years, many Iranian athletes have left their country, citing government pressure. In September, Saeed Mollaei, an Iranian judoka, left the country for Germany. He said Iranian officials had forced him to not compete with Israeli judoka.

Alireza Faghani, an Iranian international soccer referee, also left Iran for Australia last year.

wearing mandatory hijab is sexism but following the tennis body's mandatory mini skirt for being eligible for professional tennis is liberalism, these issues are present everywhere tbh, some people have issues with hijab wearing others also have issues with tennis body's rules as well and should be highlighted, more over her decision may have resulted in probably not being recalled as part of iranian olympics squad.

Wrong analogy.

You can't wear jeans and shirt while swimming, can you?

Stop justifying what these outdated governments are doing. Thanks.

The people who matter, and make an actual difference, matter more than these brainwashed nutjobs.

I can understand that such pressure from the Iranian government can force them to defect. It cannot be termed as defection from religion or due to religion. The North Koreans look for the opportunity where they can defect to South Korea, not because of religious persecution but the general oppression of the masses.

The Hijab can either be part of culture or recommended by the religion. It is not 'forced'. But if the victorious woman cannot even speak her own words, then its human nature that they will revolt against the oppressor.

A human can bear loss of even if you kill his/her family. While sanction his/her liberty, and they will fight with courage you do not expect them to show.

There is a reason that in the Quran Allah constantly reminds us to not be among the "oppressors".

what one wears or doesnt wear is upto the individual/ participating cultures, i was referring to tennis body rules for mini skirt not swimming, which seems pretty perplexing.

calling a govt which doesnt conform to western europe clothing ideals as outdated seems like you make western europe clothing, the measuring scale of whats outdated and what's not.

Since you are fascist, you only.have a fascist mindset. I want the Government to stop forcing any particular type of clothing. As long as it isn't fully nude, or fully covered, it should be legal. Simple shit.

As always my point went over your narrow head. I was saying his analogy of comparing sports-based clothing regulations with Government restrictions for everyday wear, is and always will be stupid.

There is NO complusion in religion!

Luckily, for Pakistan, we never fell to the FazoolMullahMaffia ...

Only Performance Based Democracy modelled on OurFirstState is the way forward for Pakistan.

What others do or don't should NOT be our concern... we have wasted 72 years for others.. let us now focus ONE Lifetime on Only Pakistan.

Economy. Economy. Economy.

Education. Education. Education.

During this time, no doubt Mullahs will try to protest. The solution is simple, send them to Hajj on a ship, and sink it.
