ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Iranian Kurds on Monday celebrated a successful independence referendum held in the Kurdistan Region, defying regional and Western pressures to postpone it.

The cities of Sanandaj (Sina), Baneh, Mariwan, Mahabad, and others in the Kurdish region saw a large group of people dancing and honking on the streets, despite risks involved.

Human rights groups, citing locals, say the Kurdish cities witness a larger than average presence of Iranian security details on the streets. This has not stopped an excited crowd from expressing their delight at watching neighboring Kurds make a historic step toward independence.

Despite a century of living across different borders, tragedies and victories in one part of the ancient Kurdish land have always affected the rest.

Whether in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, or the Diaspora, Kurds are proud of the 2015 victory of Kobani over the Islamic State (IS) and shiver when remembering the 1988 gassing of Halabja or the 1937-8 Dersim massacre.

For a nation that has faced annihilation because of statelessness, independence is an ageless dream, one whose feasibility has long been debated until today’s referendum.

Hostile neighboring powers Iran and Turkey, whose Kurdish population is suffocating under iron fists, openly oppose the referendum.

Iran, which has been boasting its widespread influence in the region—mainly in war-torn Syria and Iraq—has condemned the move and threatened the Kurdistan Region.

It halted air travel to Kurdistan yesterday.

Analysts told Kurdistan 24 the referendum would affect the life of Iranian Kurds in different ways.

Kurdistan24

kurds in Iran should have their referendum too.

Once there was a Ruski project named "mahabad republic" with their puppet qazi muhammad leading the project, it collapsed faster than a house of cards.

Qazi Muhammad's internal support eventually declined, especially among the Kurdish tribes who had supported him initially. Their crops and supplies were dwindling, and their way of life was becoming hard as a result of the isolation. Economic aid and military assistance from the Soviet Union was gone, and the tribes saw no reason to support him. The townspeople and the tribes had a large divide between them, and their alliance for Mahabad was crumbling. The tribes and their leaders had only supported Qazi Muhammad for his economic and military aid from the Soviet Union. Once that was gone, many did not see any reason to support him. Other tribes resented the Barzanis, since they did not like sharing their already dwindling resources with them. Some Kurds deserted Mahabad, including one of Mahabad's own marshals, Amir Khan. Mahabad was economically bankrupt, and it would have been nearly impossible for Mahabad to have been economically sound without harmony with Iran.

Put a difference between communists of USSR and current orthodox Russia.
Russia is not a colonial power anymore, and what you said is true.

That is called desperation. :D

That propagandist doesn't know that Kurds of Iraq helped us against Saddam and our own Kurds were the first front line against that savage.
Barzani is a different story, fortunately Kurds mostly opposed him. Especiaaly our brothers in Soleymania of Iraq.

Yes :P

May ALLAH free the Kurds from Iranian oppression
If allah wanted that he would do it in 1946 (ruski/soviet puppet republic of mahabad). There is no oppression. allah and other powers created some new countries after world war one, many of these fake/artificial countries have straight borders, however the Kurds had bad luck that allah and the powers of that time were not fair to give them also a post-ottoman fake country.
Therefore they should not become mad towards the real and ancient country (
Iran), but towards those who made the new borders and created these countries in 20th century without giving a share to the Kurds.

While Saudi people in Al-Awamiye have been targeted by army and their houses have been destroyed , seeing Iranian people esp Kurds are happy and celebrate for whatever reason it might be freely is good.
