Amid the widening protests in New York and other major US cities against Washington's financial policies, Iran urges US authorities to halt the suppression of anti-government rallies and heed the pleas of the American people.
The protests in the United States stem from the persisting economic crisis in the West and the US, said Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast during his weekly press conference on Tuesday, expressing concern about abusive measures employed by American police forces against protesters that have been voicing opposition to US financial policymakers.
The rallies originally started on September 17 under the banner 'Occupy Wall Street,' when activists and demonstrators announced their intention to seize the US financial district in protest to the country's dire economic conditions -- which they say is caused by corporate greed.
Similarly, many demonstrators have taken to the streets in Chicago and Los Angeles. They have been carrying anti-war placards and expressing frustration with the country's high unemployment rate, which stood at 9.1 percent for August.
Some of the protesters say the idea to occupy Wall Street was inspired by the popular uprisings of the past months in the Middle Eastern and North African countries.
At times like this I am with the american people and wish them success in their protests. I hope the UN takes some action
