Islamic Republic of Iran has unveiled smart laser-guided ammunition dubbed "Basir" manufactured by the country's military experts.

Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi attended the unveiling ceremony in the capital Tehran on Monday.

The general said that it is the first time that such ammunition has been designed and manufactured by Iranian experts in the Defense Industry Organization.

He added that Basir is designed to destroy tanks, military vehicles, bridges, and other moving or non-moving targets with high precision. It is also capable of identifying and locating targets.

General Vahidi noted that the projectile, which has a range of 20 km, is very useful in mountainous areas.

Iran is among top five countries capable of producing smart weapons using indigenous technology, he added.

The Islamic Republic has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems in recent years.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations, especially regional neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.

TEHRAN — Iran has developed laser-guided artillery rounds designed to home in on stationary or moving targets at a distance of up to 20 kilometres (12 miles), Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi told state media Monday.

State television showed images of artillery being fired, saying it showed the precision-guided ammunition in action.

No details were given on the technology purported to be used.

"Iran is now one of just five countries in the world able to manufacture these sorts of weapons through domestic technology," Vahidi said.

The Islamic republic is subject to a UN embargo on foreign arms imports because of suspicions over its nuclear programme.

It frequently announces domestically produced, hi-tech breakthroughs in the military sector, though gives few details.

Early this month, it test-fired short-range missiles during navy war games.

And Vahidi last week said new air and sea defence systems, and electronic warfare technology, would be presented next month, when Iran commemorates the anniversary of its 1979 Islamic revolution.

“This ammunition is guided by laser and has been designed and manufactured by Defense Industries Organization’s capable and competent experts for the first time in the country,” Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said during the ceremony.

“This smart ammunition is capable of hitting and destroying bridges, tanks, military equipment, command posts, and moving targets,” he explained.

“The built-in laser system of this ammunition can track, identify, locate, and determine the distance of intended targets,” he said.
