Not sure what we are to discuss (maybe Saudi Arabian - Iranian relations?) but here is a photo of a younger later to be King Faisal and a younger later to be King Khalid. From 1957. With the last Shah of Iran.

I have always wondered about something.

Are there photos of Khomeini or Khamenei let alone other well-known Iranian clerics performing hajj or umrah? Never seen such photos before. Especially as many are/claim to be from Sadah families which gives a certain obligation in this regard. I have seen plenty of Shia Arab leaders performing hajj and umrah (also the militant ones such as Muqtada Al-Sadr) though.

I thought it would be nice to take a break from all the verbal clashes and be a reminder for non-Saudi & non-Iranian posters that these two nations aren't hating each other all the time and that there is rays of hope for future better relationship.

Thanks for sharing the pics of Shah & King Faisal and King Khalid also.

I think that's a good observation. I don't remember any pictures myself and I don't remember in my time Khamenei performing Hajj or Umrah. I'm sure he has done hajj when he was younger so no pictures available. However, I don't think Khamenei has ever left the country when became Velayat Faghih.

For Khomeini, he went to Hajj in 1933, so it was 46 years before the revolution, and this means he was 30 years old.

Here is what I found online from his memories,

“I went on pilgrimage to Mecca only once in my life. When I set off, I used different means of transportation. This trip took me 17 days to reach there.

“We traveled by ship to the other side of the sea. When I entered the ship, I saw that a group of different people from Tehran and other towns were on board, but they were all anxious and uncomfortable. When I asked them the reason, they answered it was because of the difficulty of the practices and rites of Hajj they were so worried.”

“Therefore, I thought I was charged with a duty to help them not to be so agitated. I asked one of them to gather the individuals in one place so that I could explain to them the issues of performing the rites. On the first day, I said that Hajj was a movement forward in tranquility without anxiety; but that movement had to be for the sake of God. It had to be made with sincerity and good-will.”

Well, we all know that at the end of the day don't we? If you ask me then the troubles began after the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Before that the ties were normal. I don't recall any major problems between KSA or the Arab world vis-a-vis Iran. Maybe outside tension with Iraq (Shatt al-Arab) and UAE (those 3 tiny islands).

Why has Khamenei never left Iran? Is that not a bit strange? Is he afraid of assassinations? If KSA/GCC/Arab world and Iran quit their proxy wars and hostility then it would be a symbolic gesture if he visited Makkah and Madinah. In return Arab leaders might visit Qom and Mashhad.

Well, I did not know that. Interesting. KSA and Iran are indeed closely located. Just a small Gulf is separating them.

Anyway you are likely to be the first Sunni Iranian that I have encountered on PDF.

Rouhani is elected president of Iran. Iran is an Islamic Republic, which is a republic with a strong Islam flavor.
