Iran hopes gas pipeline to Pakistan becomes operational by 2013

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the natural gas pipeline linking Iran to Pakistan will hopefully become operational by 2013, the English language satellite Press TV reported on Sunday.
The Iranian president said that the construction of the natural gas pipeline, stretching from Iran's South Pars gas field to Pakistan, is underway, said the report.
The long-awaited pipeline would hopefully become operational by the end of 2012, he added.
According to the report, Iran plans to export up to 21 million cubic meters of natural gas to Pakistan annually through the multi- billion-dollar pipeline.
The level of trade between Tehran and Islamabad should hit one billion U.S. dollars in the near future, he was quoted as saying.
The Pakistani president proposed that financial transactions between Iran and Pakistan be conducted in the two countries' currencies rather than the U.S. dollar, saying this would help decrease smuggling and improve trade ties, according to Press TV.
The two presidents also discussed the plan to transfer electricity from Iran to Pakistan. Zardari arrived here in Tehran on Saturday as the head of a high-ranking delegation for talks.

Excellant news unlike indians which caved under american pressure for once our politicos didnt. We need to do more of this and do deals with neighbours and have good relations with neighbours and not to follow US ulterior motives.

I don't know about others. But we need to have good relations with Iran. (Some might disagree)

As long as we are licking US's boots, our relations with Iran cannot strengthen. Can you see the dilemma that we need to import crude oil other than iran, Iranian crude is cheaper and is available on softer payment terms.

No bank is ready to open Letter of credits for Iranian crude.

In exchange for nuclear energy, I think it was a decent move. The more we change from coal to nuclear energy the faster we will be able to meet our energy requirements.

And as always, we retain Iran in our official diplomatic relations as well as gain strong ground in US' minds as well. That's called foreign policy. Thanks to Chanakya :smokin:

^^^^ we are not licking anyone's boot (it offended me) its only idiot zardari and you should also know that common Pakistani hates USA like anything..:pakistan::pakistan::pakistan::pakistan:

why a single individual is blamed for 60 years of alliance with usa? it is illogical and untrue. If military decides all will stop licking boots of usa.

Good news hope this will bring prices of Gas down in Pakistan. Best of luck guys.

It will be good luck for Pakistan once the gas pipeline becomes operational. currently the availability of gas to our industry is more important than price itself. Our own gas production is on decline and there will be a crisis after 5-8 years if there are no gas imports due to ever increasing demands for natural gas. Natural Gas is the largest energy source in our country.

Hey what about your Thar Coal Reserve?

Hey what about your Thar Coal Reserve?

coal has very dangerous environmental impacts and even attributed to global warming. west is already thinking of abandoning it. Coal is the worst pollutant. Among all of the fossil fuels, Natural Gas is the least pollutant.

any coal power plant in our country should be build near to indian borders to export electricity to india

better to think and do that is actually possible and practical. the ideal form of energy are nuclear, solar power, geothermal, wind, tidal power etc. we will not be able to use them for another several decades to fulfill our requirements.

so the Gas pipeline from Iran is the shortest possible term solution. we also have an agreement of gas with turkmenistan.

I suppose it maybe alright to get gas from Iran, as along it doesn't ruin Pakistan's bilateral relations with the Persian Gulf countries and doesn't put Pakistan under UN sanctions.

I too think, it is difficult that usa or its gulf allies would like to see this pipeline operational. I have little hope for this pipeline to become operational one day. But no doubt it is in our best interest as it can help prevent decline in our industry. if we are sincere to our national interest then this pipeline and also of turkmenistan are more important than the relations with gulf countries. even if we ruin our relations with these gulf countries at the cost of these two pipelines we will not loose much while these gulf sheikhdoms cannot afford to loose pakistan. if we forever want to beg from these sheikhdoms at the cost of our national interest then we are loosers.

UN havn't banned anyone to buy oil and gas from Iran. also UN sanctions cannot harm us as long as china support pakistan. I believe that sanctions will only help us to become self sufficient and in such a case a new bloc with emerge in the region. so politically there is no point that sanctions ever are going to be imposed on our country if we import gas from Iran. west and arab kings cannot afford to loose pakistan.

The only hurdle is the payment to gas dues to Iran and we have already offered IRAN to pay them in our own currency (Pak Rupees) and it is in our own interest. It is clear that dollar and euro are out of question in this deal, so here again it hurts west. This Pipeline infact is a blow to west and it will be our good luck if it becomes operational. (west will only opt thru terrorism to block it but will fail in the end).
