In 1986, Chernobyl happened in present in Ukraine (under USSR then) and even after 3.5 decades and more than 1200 km away in Sweden , there are elevated levels of radioactive particles especially Rn gas which resulted an increase of cancer related deaths.
Reactors are not designed for destruction rather for power generation and a lot of layers of safeguards are employed to lower the emissions in case of a failure.
