Colombo, Feb 24 (PTI) Sri Lankan citizens stranded in violence hit-Libya would be evacuated by Indian ship as New Delhi has agreed to facilitate their return from the North African nation, a top official said today.

"We have arranged for our people to join the Indian ship which aims to evacuate the Indian workers to Malta," Lankan Minister of Foreign Employment Dilan Perera told reporters.

Perera said only the Tripoli airport is currently functioning in Libya, which is witnessing anti-government protests that have claimed 300 lives so far.
"Because of the clashes people can''t come by road to the Tripoli airport. This forced us not to charter a flight.

"We have heard that some 56 of our workers are currently heading towards Egypt. We have sent the money to Egypt to arrange for their return," the minister said.
Yesterday, Sri Lankan Ministry of External Affairs had said plans were underway to evacuate the Sri Lankans from Libya if necessary in view of the political disturbances in the African nation. Some 1200 Sri Lankans are estimated to be working in Libya.

Notably, Indian ship, ''Scotia Prince'', is already in Egypt and will reach Benghazi by February 27 which will be the initial focus of the evacuation operations.
Following the ouster of leaders in Tunisia and Egypt, large-scale protests have erupted in several Middle East and North African countries including Bahrain, Yemen and Libya.
Libya, however, has responded with an extreme show of force resulting in the death of hundreds of people.

Great move by India. Many migrant workers are getting seriously injured in the turmoil. I think we should try and evacuate everyone as soon as possible.
