Indian Navy to acquire three aircraft carriers in 5-7 years: Defence Minister Antony

The Indian Navy has been acquiring sea-based assets for littoral warfare, including purchase of landing platform docks and long-range maritime surveillance aircraft, and plans to acquire at least three aircraft carriers in the next five to seven years, in addition to other assets.

An Indian Defence Ministry news release said quoting Defence Minister A.K. Antony who asked the Navy to increase Navy-to-Navy contact with the littoral countries of the Indian Ocean. This move comes five years after the service incorporated preparation for littoral warfare as part of the Navy’s long term doctrine.

Addressing top Indian military commanders at a meeting in Delhi on Oct. 27, Antony said, "The complex maritime security environment in our region requires the Navy to maintain a state of perpetual readiness operationally. You must factor in the need to be ready at all times prominently, while planning for the future. At the same time, we need to maintain, and even increase, the momentum of our Navy-to-Navy contact with the littoral countries of the Indian Ocean. Such contacts strengthen professional ties and mutual trust, and streamline interoperability issues." Antony said New Delhi is committed to the continued deployment of ships and aircraft to improve surveillance off the coast of Maldives and Seychelles to ensure maritime security from piracy.

What is he talking about..? 3rd Carrier..?

May be we are going to buy the UK's Aircraft Carrier?? Could this be the third AC he is talking about??

Yes..I am afraid that only can be the case. No way we can make IAC-II in 7 years and induct it..I guess IAC-II will have to wait till 2025 now and most probably will be super-carrier..

^^Yes..But how can we manage IAC-2 in 7 years...Only QE can be inducted in 7 years... Unless of course this is another " Anthony saab " special.

we don't have plan to buy 3 aircraft carriers.

from my point of view, further upgrading our infrastructure, such as our civic airports and roads in rural areas, keep spending on our education reform, keep investing in health care are better than aircraft carriers.

and I also know that 3 aircraft carriers are not going to make india safer. clearly the biggest enemy in the short to mid term is from those domestic freedom fights who are seeking independence.

Looks like the timelines a little ambitious, and he may not be sure while sayin 7 years. However the keel was laid for IAc1 in 2009 and scheduled for delivery by 2014. looking at that I can say if IAC2 starts by 2011 or by 2012 then 2018-20 will be an ideal time to have all the carriers to be inducted.

I can say that if timelines are met then by 2017 you can see IAC2 launched on water or may be harbor trials.

i belive he is talking about the IAC 2 , there have been reports that indian navy officers going to see the decommisioned Kitty hawk and the Kutneznove. to get a feel how big carriers are and how they would function in an indian enviroment , i am sure the IAC 2 will be arround 65K tons and may not nessarly be nuclear.

Including Viraat we will have three carriers. I don't think India will buy QE...

We have done too much shopping in recent times ... :) We need more submarines and stealth frigates more than aircraft carriers.
