Indian killed as sectarian violence rocks northern Nigeria

A 23-year-old Indian was killed and six other Indians including two children, were injured in a wave of coordinated bombings and gun attacks by an Islamic sect that left at least 162 people dead in northern Nigeria’s largest city of Kano.

Kevalkumar Kalidas Rajput from Dahod in Gujarat, who worked for Kano-based firm M/s Relchem, was among those killed in Friday’s deadly attacks, a statement issued by the High Commission of India in Nigeria said on Saturday. It said Rajput and two of his co-employees from Nepal, Hari Prasad Bhusal and Raj Singh, lost their lives when their car entered a zone of hostilities.

The High Commission said six other Indian nationals, including two small children, belonging to two families have received injuries from falling shrapnel and debris and are being treated in Kano hospitals.

On Friday, militants shot at residents and security personnel and bombed security services offices in Kano, the second most populated city in Nigeria.

In New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna condemned the deadly attacks in Kano and regretted the 'unfortunate” loss of life. The families of the Indian killed and those injured in the attacks have been contacted by authorities.

At least 162 people were killed and several others injured when militants launched a series of coordinated bomb attacks targeting police stations and the headquarters of Nigeria’s secret police in the Muslim dominated northern city of Kano.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the governor of Kano State, imposed a 24-hour curfew after the bodies, including those of several policemen, were found scattered all over the the state capital, Nigeria’s second—largest city, which exploded into violence since yesterday.

According to a media report, a purported spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for the violence, saying it was in response to Nigerian authorities’ refusal to release its members from custody.

Hospital sources said the death toll in the bombings and shootings that rocked Kano surged to 162 even as the country’s police authorities hesitated in giving casualty figure.

A doctor at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital said dead bodies and some wounded people were brought to the hospital.

According to him some of the injured persons were foreigners, including Indians who live close to the SSS headquarters.

A hospital worker who craved for anonymity disclosed this stating that dead bodies were piling up in a mortuary at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.

He added that the number of the dead may increase because more bodies are being brought in from different parts of the city.

An official of the Red Cross, Nwakpa O Nwakpa said his aid agency is still collecting the bodies of the dead and injured and taking them to emergency units of some hospitals or mortuaries.

Later, a spokesman of Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram, Abul Qaqa said his group is responsible for the attacks.

According to him, the government has refused to release members of the group held at various prisons in Kano, hence the attack.

The police are yet to come up with an official record and calls made to the spokesman, Olusola Amore were not picked.

Authorities in the oil rich African country are known to downplay death tolls during terror attacks and emergencies.

The governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso has imposed a 24 hour curfew after bodies were found scattered all over the commercial city which doubles as the state capital.

Military men are seen putting up check points at various parts of the city.

Authorities said militants, some of whom came as suicide bombers, targeted four police stations; the headquarters of the country’s secret police, state security service (SSS) in Kano state and an immigration office.

A police source said he is yet to confirm the nationality of few dead persons confirmed to be foreigners.

The bombings which numbered up to twenty caused pandemonium in the metropolis and were followed by shoot—outs between the militants and security agencies especially at the eastern Bompai district of the city.

Residents who heard the sound of the bombs with smokes billowing out of the police building scampered for safety.

“Some policemen who survived the attack were seen at the premises of Zone one police station dirtied with dusts from the rubble while the dismembered body of a suicide bomber lay at the premises,” a witness told PTI.

Their patrol vehicle was accosted by a suicide bomber who tried to jump on them but was fire at by the officers.

A reporter for a local television, channels, Enenche Akogwu was among those killed in the attacks the station announced.

As someone mentioned in another thread: 'Muslims are the greatest threat to Islam".

Too many direct action days in Nigeria lately. Best to split the country on religious lines so that all non muslims can move to the south side and the sh*tstorm will be contained to the crackpot side.

Of course, there will not be peace, as the idea is too little hearted and intolerant. But the best case scenario still.

It will be bad move strengthening the hands of Islamists all over the world.

Then what do you propose? UNPKF is a toothless tiger. They are not allowed to strike hard first hand; they are allowed only to return fire. And we don't have a government like Israel's to exact grim retribution against Jihad even in our surrounding; forget so far away in Africa.

See the only way to handle and boot jihad is to use Chinese method; but which means we will have to make a few sacrifices including the greater-than-eternity-god's-gift called Indian democracy that most of our fellow Indians worship more than anything else. This is the harsh truth; Either remain oblivious intentionally, or take the tough decision to tackle the problem head on.

If democracy is the price to pay to fight terror, what are we fighting for? Just living?

@fateh71: At the least, you are being over simplistic.

You are like the Americans who call for division of J&K on religious lines so that there is no more problem. Pakistan exists today because of some British guys, who are irresponsible like you, thought it is too taxing on their brains to try and solve a conflict and said 'Ok, we are packing on the 14th and these guys are still fighting. lets break them up so that they won't fight'. This is the solution of the imperialists who had no interest in their colonies once their word has no value.

No wonder this is the solution they offer at the stroke of a hand to India, Pakistan(also to any state or province in India and Pakistan that they can name), Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Nigeria, Indonesia and not to Canadian Quebec, Scotland, Irish territories(To include both Ireland and Northern Ireland). For people who they don't care about, the solution is either division or a face like Yahya, Musharraff, Saddam, Gaddafi, Mubarak.
If you got a thought like 'They don't care about Canada either', follow it up with this thought 'May be this applies to people who are not capable of quiet resolution of conflicts'. For you Nigerians fall in this category. For them, Indians also fall in the same category(Hence Kashmir should be an international issue). If all this has some overtones of racism, I am not responsible.

To summarize, there might be millions of patriotic Nigerians who want their country united and strong, who believe they can live together.

Crush Boko Haram mercilessly. Did GoI let go of Punjab or Kashmir or NE states just bcs some terorists organizations decided that its a good idea to blast some bombs and kill some civilains.

Anyways its upto the Nigerian Govt to decide whether they want to simply let go bcs of some terrorist organization's terror tactics or they decide to take terror head on.

Yeah... if you noticed Harpoon bhai, we are not exactly being ruled by Ariel Sharon or Narendra Modi for that matter. I too agree with the "crush" part but the question is: HOW?

This government doesn't even avenge 26/11 and you're talking about a couple of Indians that got killed in Nigeria to be avenged that too by this government...
