A tourist has been ridiculed online after asking for advice on driving a rental car from Sydney to New Zealand.

Posting to Tripadvisor, the person said they were from India and were keen on flying into Sydney before driving the rest of the trip to New Zealand.

The travel enthusiast first queried whether they could use a single car rental agreement across countries, before asking if they needed a separate visa.

'Hi, I am from India and planning to go to Sydney in December. I want to drive from Sydney-Auckland-Queenstown and fly back to India from there,' the post read.

'Is it possible that I hire a car in Sydney and drive throughout till Queenstown and drop the car there. I am recently told that driving across two countries require seperate car rental agreement.'

'Also, do I have to apply for seperate visas for both the countries or is there any joint visa for for Australia and New Zealand?' the post continued.

The post was quickly met with a lot of ridicule and sarcasm, with many comments telling the user to check a world map or use a water car.

'Hi, You'll need one of these and a lot of luck. Cheers,' one user wrote alone with a link to a water car.

'Please look at a world map,' another person commented.

'Yes sure, one rental agreement and theres (sic) a big bridge that you can drive over. Or perhaps use the tunnel under the Tasman Sea...' another person wrote.

Despite the large amount of advice mixed among the sarcastic replied, the tourist commented once again, not quite grasping the idea it's impossible to drive between Australia and New Zealand.

'Thanks for the information... I want to go to Sydney first and then visit New Zealand. Sydney-Auckland airfare is coming around 20k in December & we are 4 pax (sic) so 80k in total. Is flying cheaper or car will be cheaper?' the enthusiastic traveller wrote.

Luckily, a few users came in with solid advice, informing the tourist they should seek help elsewhere.

'Please don't get me wrong, but since you still seem to think you can drive from Sydney to Auckland, I suggest you visit a travel agent and have them help you plan your trip,' the helpful person wrote.

'Or if you are set on doing this yourself, look at a map and read some travel guides.'

In India there are alot of places where the vehicle is boarded onto a barge and and one or 2 hour ride on the barge helps you to cross over to the other side before driving off. I have personally taken a bus in Karnataka which was loaded similarly although the barge ride was about 30 min.
I think the construction of bridge was more expensive for volume of traffic or simply not yet done by govt.
However this case was ridiculous because of the distance.
