Govt Mulling Optical Fibre Network for Defence Forces

Government is considering providing a dedicated Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) network to the defence forces in place of the spectrum released by them for civilian usage, Defence Minister A K Antony said today.

"Government is considering a nationwide exclusive, dedicated Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) Network for armed forces in lieu of spectrum being released by them," Defence Minister A K Antony said in reply to a Rajya Sabha query.

Armed Forces have released both 2G and 3G spectrum to the Department of Telecom, which has requested for more spectrum from the Defence Ministry.

Antony said the proposed communications network would be laid by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Ministry through its agency Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

I thought this had been cleared and had already begun??

Its operational for IAF, inaugurated last year. And for Indian Navy and Indian Army its under construction.

First they have gone for IAF because its the biggest user of spectrum and if they build a dedicated network for IAF it will free huge amount of spectrum.
