Indian workers in forced slavery for suspected insurgents in Iraq
06/08/2011 12:24
Erbil, Aug. 6 (AKnews) – Three workers from India – promised lucrative work in Iraq – have been taken to an unknown destination in Iraq, had their papers confiscated and are being made to work for suspected insurgents, the Times of India reports today.

According to the newspaper, there are 37 Indian nationals currently trapped in Iraq.

The three workers featuring in this morning’s report, Zorawar Singh, Kulwinder Singh and Bhagwan Ddas have each managed to inform their families that they are being held at an unknown location in Iraq, adding that they are being mistreated.

Zorawar Singh – in Iraq since January this year – told the Times of India that the three men had been told they were going to work on a military camp for a monthly salary of between $800 and $900. On arrival in Baghdad, the men were stripped of their passports and taken to a deserted location, approximately 300 km from the Iraqi capital.

The next day, the three men were shown bombs and told they were to transport them. When they refused, they were told that they would not get their passports back and would not be allowed to leave.

The men have been forced to learn how to use a range of firearms – any refusal to cooperate incurs a beating, Singh complained. He said that they are often deprived of food and water.

The families of the three men have been appealing for help.

“My brother was sent to Iraq via Kuwait. He is being held like a captive and his passport has been taken away," said Zorawar's brother.

Kulwinder’s sister said: "My brother is working like a bonded labourer. He is being intimidated and forced to work for 18 hours without any rest," said Kulwinder's sister.

Bal Mukund’s father meanwhile blamed himself for his son’s predicament: "It's my fault because I told my son to go abroad to earn money. Bhagwan Das didn't want to go. I don't know what he is facing now. I request the government to help bring him back."

Three Indian workers lured with the promise of work to Iraq are now facing untold mental agony. The workers have been taken to an unknown place in Iraq and are allegedly being made to work for suspected Iraqi insurgents. There are reportedly 37 Indians trapped in the country.

Zorawar Singh, Kulwinder Singh and Bhagwan Ddas of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar respectively have informed their families that they have been kept at unknown location in Iraq and have added that they are being treated very badly.

TIMES NOW spoke to Zorawar Singh, who recounted the agony he has been facing since January this year.

He narrated, "In January we took a flight from Delhi to Baghdad. We were told that we would work at the military base camp and get a salary of 800-900 dollars. So when we reached, the authorities even asked us if we were there to work at the military base and took a look at our passports. They then put us in cars and took us to this deserted location which must have been at least 300 kms from Baghdad. We stayed a night and the next day we were told we have to work there itself. We saw bombs and then we were told we have to transport them."

"When we refused, they told us neither can we leave and nor will we get our passports back. They have all sorts of weapons and they insist that we learn how to use them and if we refuse they beat us up. We are treated badly and given no food or even water to drink," he added.

Meanwhile, the police claim that their anti-trafficking cell is looking into the matter. HPS Khakh, DSP, Jalandhar rural said, "Bal Mukund has filed a complaint against a travel agent who sent his son abroad. Our anti-trafficking cell is looking into the case."

Pathetic!. Wonder whether special forces will be sent to free our people. We just have to do a single series of missions to get our folks back. Iraq is not the same Iraq as it used to be for India under Saddam. Time to really gear up. Those are our people there. UPA are you freaking listening? :hitwall:

The news looks fake to me.

Indians/South-Asians working as house hold help in most middle eastern countries are facing similar situation. The govt should try to tell the people about such situations to enable them to make some responsible decision. Most people are lured by false claims of agents who offer them superficial benefits and gullible people fall into the trap.
