Erbil, Aug. 6 (AKnews) Three workers from India promised lucrative work in Iraq have been taken to an unknown destination in Iraq, had their papers confiscated and are being made to work for suspected insurgents, the Times of India reports today.
According to the newspaper, there are 37 Indian nationals currently trapped in Iraq.
The three workers featuring in this mornings report, Zorawar Singh, Kulwinder Singh and Bhagwan Ddas have each managed to inform their families that they are being held at an unknown location in Iraq, adding that they are being mistreated.
Zorawar Singh in Iraq since January this year told the Times of India that the three men had been told they were going to work on a military camp for a monthly salary of between $800 and $900. On arrival in Baghdad, the men were stripped of their passports and taken to a deserted location, approximately 300 km from the Iraqi capital.
The next day, the three men were shown bombs and told they were to transport them. When they refused, they were told that they would not get their passports back and would not be allowed to leave.
The men have been forced to learn how to use a range of firearms any refusal to cooperate incurs a beating, Singh complained. He said that they are often deprived of food and water.
The families of the three men have been appealing for help.
My brother was sent to Iraq via Kuwait. He is being held like a captive and his passport has been taken away," said Zorawar's brother.
Kulwinders sister said: "My brother is working like a bonded labourer. He is being intimidated and forced to work for 18 hours without any rest," said Kulwinder's sister.
Bal Mukunds father meanwhile blamed himself for his sons predicament: "It's my fault because I told my son to go abroad to earn money. Bhagwan Das didn't want to go. I don't know what he is facing now. I request the government to help bring him back."

. Wonder whether special forces will be sent to free our people. We just have to do a single series of missions to get our folks back. Iraq is not the same Iraq as it used to be for India under Saddam. Time to really gear up. Those are our people there. UPA are you freaking listening?
