Indian Army showcases its capabilities at Pokhran firing range - The Times of India

JAISALMER: The Indian Army demonstrated its firing skills at the Pokhran field firing range here on Friday. The Blazing Chariots fire power demonstration was organized jointly by Black Mace Brigade and Konark Corps. The unit of 4 Mechanized Infantry Battalion is celebrating the centenary of its participation in the World War I. The display involved integrated firing and also display of equipment. It showcased the capabilities, proficiency and preparedness of the Indian Army.

With the rise in terrorism, the Army is preparing itself to face challenges in a better way. Modern equipment in the Army inventory fired with precision, with the main attraction being T-90 tanks -- counted amongst the most technologically advanced tanks in the world. The tanks are capable of firing a variety of ammunition and missiles with sharp accuracy both during the day and night. As a part of demonstration, a synchronized attack by armoured, artillery and mechanized infantry, was conducted to capture an enemy location during day and night.

This started with artillery bombarding the enemy location from a distance of 18-20 kms. The tanks then assaulted the enemy location with speed and accurate firing which was soon followed by dismounted attack by the mechanized infantry. A similar attack was launched during night as well. In this demonstration, the Army hit the targets using emergence sensor, satellite imagery and electronic sensor.

The 4 Mechanised Infantry Battalion was raised in 1846 as XIV Ferozepore Sikhs and has the rare distinction of participating in all major wars involving the British Indian Army and the Indian Army since its inception. The Battalion is the most decorated battalion in the Commonwealth Nations and has to its credit 343 Gallantry Awards, including one Victoria Cross, two Param Vir Chakras, five Maha Vir Chakras and 26 Vir Chakras. The unit participated during World War I from 1914 -1918, during which it fought in Egypt, Mesopotamia and Turkey.

The original Man Singh Trophy, a replica of which was presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tony Abbott, his Australian counterpart, was also on display. Its significance lies in the fact, that this is the only trophy presented by the British officers to honour the contribution of Indian soldiers in the great war.

Other artifacts and trophies too left one awestruck.

Brigadier Vipul Singhal said that Indian Army is efficient enough to deal with any kind of challenge. "Such practice is done to show our fire power capacity and our efficiency, how we attack the enemy and win during war-time," he said.
