India, UK finalise joint research projects in nuclear sector

MAHABALIPURAM: Nuclear scientists from India and the UK today decided to collaborate on a series of research projects, including developing new materials for fast reactors.

The research projects were finalised at a meeting between the Department of Atomic Energy and a British delegation led by Jason Green , Head of the Energy Programmes of the Research Council, UK in this temple town.

"We have zeroed in on the research projects including research on zirconium and new material for fast reactor-oxide dispersion stainless steel," Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Srikumar Banerjee told PTI after the day-long meeting.

This is the first set of collaborative projects by scientists from both the countries.

The 20-member UK delegation included four diplomats from British High Commission in India and 16 scientists from University of Manchester, Imperial College, Cambridge University and Fusion Research Institute.

"We also discussed about the future collaborative projects," Banerjee said, adding since there was a gap in the nuclear programme in UK, this collaboration with India will be beneficial for them and Indian scientists.

In February, an industry delegation from the UK, including representatives from Rolls-Royce Group Plc , Serco Group Plc and WS Atkins had visited India to explore possibilities for participation in India's ambitious plans to expand its civil nuclear sector.

The delegation was led by Barbara Judge , a former chairman of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and Keith Parker , the nuclear association's chief executive officer.

Excellent news, so much talks about India-US nuclear deal but not heard of any collaborations or even any reactor sale!!! India should speed up cooperation with Russia, UK, France, Japan etc for research areas.

India has already signed & upgraded original agreements with Russia & same with French, US too.

Countries like UK take time becoz of their historical baggage. Even australia will fall in line soon.

Wow....we have research going on with Russia also in thorium field which is even more important for us. Do we have something similar with US, France and Japan ?/

Australia are being so akward about it they have like 1/3 of the worlds supply and still refuse India its because John howard did not get ICC post they pissed

I don't think we need their consent. Like Japan, they will also come on track and will follow like the rest of of others.

Aus not falling in line in near future is impossible. When all the major nuclear powers viz US, RUSSIA, France, Ukraine, Japan are concluding Nuclear pacts with INDIA and gaining moolah it makes no business sense to sit back and just enjoy the show.
If they are so very concerned about proliferation, they would have brought up some resolution in UN snubbing PAK and their Chief architect for blatant proliferation.
Its just that they have ego baggages. when it wanes away, they will come running.

And INDIA has gained considerable experience in Breeder Reactors and soon they will switch to Thorium. When this happens, India with 40 % world reserves of Thorium wont even have to ask any country for any resource. So they better hurry up or its their loss.
