Food for thought: India to study Pakistan's one-dish law

Perturbed over huge wastage of food on social events in the country, the government on Monday said it would study the “one-dish” law of Pakistan and similar legislation of other countries to deal with the problem.

“We have received many suggestions to control food wastage at social functions. A member of the National Advisory Council [NAC] has recommended imposition of Pakistan's one-dish law,” Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K.V. Thomas told reporters.

The meeting convened on the issue was also attended by NAC member N.C. Saxena, the former Governor of Uttarakhand and Sikkim, Sudharshan Aggarwal, and Rajya Sabha member Rajiv Sukhla among others.

Mr. Thomas said about 15-20 per cent of food was being wasted in India at social gatherings.

Elaborating on the suggestions that emerged during the meeting, the Minister said: “Everybody agreed that a country like ours, which is 63 in the hunger index, cannot afford to have such a huge loss of food during big events. One view is to start an awareness campaign via Jago Grahak Jago and later go for legislation if the need arises.”

Mr. Saxena said Pakistan's one-dish law on weddings limited menu to one vegetable and chappati or rice.

Certainly a good thought, but I doubt of its efficacy in implementation.

Does Pakistan really have such a law? Its a little weird on how you would implement such laws...

Once again I would like to report this member's signature as deeply offensive. It is purely slander with no credible proof whatsoever so why allow this "premium" member to state it as fact when it's clearly not?

Anyways good fr india... just like the copied the HEC idea.

As for the one dish.... well govt has banned ppl frm servin more than 1 dish in wedding parties........

what is one dish law,how is it applied?

Pakistan's one-dish law was introduced during Musharaff's rule because the elite would have large meals in weddings and much of the food would go to waste. The law limits wedding feasts to one main dish, and it could be a vegetarian dish or a dish with meat.

Does this apply to every wedding? Or only obliged to politicians?

This is an excellent law. Also, i have heard that Pakistan is going for a law which will restrict a person or party ordering food in any restaurant to order it to the limit on which he may be able to finish it. On anything extra that goes waste they will be fined. India should also follow this to stop wastage.

Totally agree... in some of the wedding I have been to recently, some people try to equate their status to the number of food items... in one of the wedding I stopped counting after some 60 food items :woot: Heard later that most went as waste, couldn't find enough people to donate the food that late in the night after the party.

utter bull shi.t .. not gonna work .. unless people realise the wastage. during peak wedding seasons thousands of wedding takes place in one day even in small cities forget metros and large cities. how are they going to monitor all the weddings . can be applied to senior politician and beaurocrates though :coffee:

Yes in Punjab only and it is totally implemented. Another thing in that law is that all wedding functions must end at 10 PM sharp :) which is even better
