India has redesigned a navigation lock at Farakka Barrage over the Ganges to ensure smooth and safe migration of the hilsa fish during the three-month spawning season.

It will ensure hilsa's journey up to Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad down the Ganges from this monsoon after a gap of over 40 years, according to a Times of India report run by UNB.

The lock had for long stalled the movement of hilsa from salty waters of downstream Bangladesh to sweeter water in the upstream, particularly during the spawning season.

Bangladesh's national fish Hilsa is holding the recognition of geographical indication (GI) product of the country.

Inland Waterway Authority of India Vice-chairman Pravir Pandey said that the gates of the barrage will remain open for only eight metres and between 1:00am and 5:00am each day, the preferred time when hilsa seeks passage.

This provision has been made in consultation with ICAR Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Central Water Commission and Farraka Barrage Project Authority," Pandey said.

The Dada India now loves to play Hilsha game but does not release water. It will allow Hilsha to enter into India, but will not allow Farakka water into Bangladesh. I just do not understand India's mean mindset. Bangladesh has been making so many efforts to increase the yield of Hilsha. Even our fishermen go hungry for one month a year because they are not allowed catching Hilsha at that period.

Now, the Dada India comes to steal our Hilsha. BD should put a long electric net across the Ganges to stop the Indian hijacking of our Hilsha. Why this Dada India does not try the same method as BD to preserve Hilsha at the mouth of Bhagirathi instead of stealing ours? Down with India and BAL.

unlikely to be successful.... the barrage has lead to silting up of the upstream ecosystem in india and hilsha now spawns in BD as the barrage has also changed the ecosystem in BD in that hilshas spawning ground has expanded into the river systems in BD that was not the case before.

Indians will need to market to the hilsha that they can now swim upstream.... good luck with that...

OK I'll be sure to 'intimate' :-) the successive leaders of the Bangladeshi Hilsa fish committee of that schedule, and see if it suits them. I will 'revert' to you with their acceptance of it.

What these idiots don't realize is that Hilsa are not Salmon, they don't really go up all the way when the draft of the river is so shallow near the Farakka (and the oxygen in the water is so meagre).

This scheme is as hare-brained as the Farakka scheme to save the Hooghly river itself. The Hooghly river is so silted up at the mouth that they have trouble getting out the Navy builds out to the ocean sometimes. Often they have to finish building the superstructure after they release it into the water.

Yes we like to do this and then force 8 billion dollar trade deficit on you (forget total CAD deficit which includes the hospital +Kolkata tourism + Indian TV addiction and such).

Then deploy BCL on ground to make sure things run smoothly and you elect to power who we say is best...she is always smiling at you too! Does it singe you each time? :D Its easy, people we don't like, we just say have voted already on the list....its really that simple!

This is cost of your liberation (you simply replace one master with another, which maybe is not so intrusive and likes to play with you more gently rather than harshly like 1st one)....I have already explained it many times yet you still keep tagging me. You have to make what we invested in blood and time, worth it for us in the end.

Then two guys like @PersonasNonGrata and @Mage in another thread are disputing that Bangladesh is a "vassal" state.....simply because I said Canada clearly is not one (given it doesn't rig elections). Words and implications they made....not me!...and then we have you that is burning from the other end of the rope lol. Please you all should make up your mind and not let Dada split you so much this way!

The very poor India remains a great thief of Asia. It loves to steal resources of other countries at ease. Now it has built a Fish Ladder for BD Hilsha to migrate to that country. It is such a mischievous ploy!!! No such thing ever happened between any two countries. India should have sought permission from BD before it built the Fish Ladder.

Poor thy neighbor is the policy of India. Indian politicians may be smiling at the suffering it causes to the people of BD. Let BD-India friendship die out!!!

Yep go back to your country and start a movement you should! You should get something going! We will hold BCL back, we promise!

Hilsha is our national wealth and in a sense, it is now our intellectual property because we have researched on the ways to expand its production through a few decades of efforts. Now, India is stealing our property without an iota of shame.

Do not worry about BCL. Hasina needs BCL to keep her in power.

Yes yes, just like you are now producing much higher quality goods than us and are more labour productive than us. :cheesy:

WTO and ILO and rest are just scams :sarcastic:

BD people made a great effort and sacrifice to enlarge Hilsha production. There was a time in the 1950s when this fish swam to Rajshahi and then to Allahabad. Then came Farakka Barrage by India and the result was the killing of the natural habitats of this fish. Its production reduced year after year that only was reversed by the solitary BD efforts.

India destroyed but we revived its production and now India comes to steal the benefit out of our long struggle. Someone should put a sense of shame to India. Why does not it try to enlarge this fish in Bhagirathi?

I do not know much on the issue my friend. Barely have gotten to eat Hilsa cpl times myself (and I found it too bony for my taste to be honest, but the taste was good). I prefer the fresh stuff I can catch out here (walleye, pike, perch and trout mostly eating wise.....except for perch, the rest are not too boney/flesh ratio).

I will let @Joe Shearer discuss with you if he wants to.

Here in Canada we also have fish ladder concepts to help with salmon conservation efforts in great lakes area. My friend is actually very involved in it as a hobby.
