India takes control of Tibetan leader Karmapa's land

I think Abir explained it quite well that foreign nationals are not allowed to own land India!!..then why should there be an outrage on a Non-issue.

India seizes Adnan Sami's property
Published: December 27, 2010

Adnan Sami had acquired eight properties, in 2003, totaling Rs25 million.

The Enforcement Directorate in India on Monday confiscated eight properties and five parking spaces belonging to singer Adnan Sami under the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

According to Indian law, a foreign national cannot acquire immovable property in India (other than on lease, not exceeding five years).

The Times of India reports that the singer had acquired eight properties, in 2003, totaling 25 million Indian rupees in a housing society in Andheri, Maharashtra. The properties now belong to the Indian government.

The Enforcement Directorate has also imposed a fine of 2 million Indian rupees on the singer.

Yep live in Toronto, been a citizen for 10 somethings years now. Proud Chinese-Canadian.

Good for you, bro, breathe the air of freedom!!!

I bet if you throw a stone in the air, it'll land on an Indian or a Chinese:-)

Never been there yet, hopefully soon for those open air festivals I keep hearing about.

Now what does that even mean, bro?

Ok tanlixiang28776 , its back to the English dictionary for you..........

Come on lay off the personal attacks, pretty sure everyone here speaks perfect English (your vocab is a little small but we don't hold that against you)

lol because you Indians are never protest against legal decisions right? Go exercise some of some of that vaunted political freedom that you keep bragging about.

No, I suspect that most Indians who shout their heads off for the Dalai Lama when China accuses him of being a stooge, wouldn't lift a finger for the Karmapa Lama.

Again you can try your best incite..but you will fail..

This decision is taken by Indian govt as per Indian constitution ..why should Indians protest against it??

I fail to see your logic..guess its time for you to take your own advice and read some of the books you were recommending the other day

PS: but I hope we see you in front Indian embassy in Canada with billboards protesting for dear Karmapa's cause .

The office of Tibetan spiritual leader Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorji has denied the deal for purchase of land by the Karmapa-backed Karmae Garchen Trust was "benami." "We wish to reiterate that this was in no way a benami land deal and the land in question was being purchased in the Trust's own name, with full knowledge of the Indian government", Karma Topden and Deki Chungyalpa, official spokespersons of the Karmapa's office, said.

They claimed the Trust had received a no-objection certificate from the Town and Country Planning Department of the Himachal Pradesh government on December 3, 2010, indicating the state government’s preliminary approval to proceed with the plans to purchase the land.

It seems that they had a waiver but the Indian government decided to break the waiver after their espionage case fell apart due to lack of evidence.

One of the tenets of a working legal code is that there would be no arbitrary punishment.

No no please let's not start bickering because I really do want some answers. Why aren't Indians upset by this? Where is the outrage?

My personal take....

The K Lama is not as much in the news as D Lama who's actions are covered by Indian and international media....

Not enough coverage = not enough reaction

Besides DL happens to be the poster child for Tibetian resistance.....Indians often see these protestors live in action in our Urban centres sparking their curiosity....hence Indians tend to know more abt DL, hence opinionated...

Question: Why do you want a reaction from us anyways? what makes you think this should upset us?

If you had any command of American slang you would understand, which leads me to think you don't even live in the U.S.

"Damn, this genius is on to me!! You are right, I am not in the US. I am in Tonga. I am this country's leading pole vault contender for this year's Special Olympics. I didn't know any better so I chose the Stars and Stripes by mistake....."

See, now that is how you use the sarcastic 'Special' word. You'll catch on.......

I want know Indians are not selectively supporting the Tibetans out of cold political calculation against China and that their feelings are genuine and not tinted by anti-Chinese motivations.

I've seen so many tears shed for and so much reverence shown to Tibetans and their spiritual men on threads about China and Tibet, I want to know that Indians have some integrity.

i have a little knowledge about this whole incident,so i would rather refrain from commenting on this....

except on a side note, corruption is a lot prevalent in india, lots of loopholes are present in law..those types of waivers can be acquired with ease...again i am not sure about anything..its just a speculation

I used it perfectly fine in my sarcastic comment. You seem to know how use it conventionally but you still have no idea what kind of connotation I applied to it in my post do you?

I understand but even if those waiver were illegally issues, they would hold.

I will give my personal opinion on this... don't question Indian integrity if opinions differ amongst the individuals.

I support their cause and their fight, but having said so, the ways and means of their struggle can be questionable at times. I believe in peaceful protests and campaigns. Being involved in shady deals and unscrupulous activities will definitely not go in good books.
