Feb 17: As the much-talked about India-China arms race spreads across the global commons — air, space and sea — and goes increasingly high-tech, the country has crossed a major milestone with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully completing sea trials of the indigenous Underwater Autonomous Vehicle (UWAV), the marine equivalent of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
Developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, the vehicle is a mini-submarine with its own intelligence and capabilities to launch surprise surgical strikes on any target across the seas.
The crucial phase of tests including its launch from a defence ship and maneuvering through various depths began early last December. The results were evaluated through last month and a confirmation that the tests had met all parameters was arrived at this week.
With this, India joins the league of naval powers with indigenous prowess to propel an unmanned, underwater vehicle that gives the jitters to its opponents. The 1.5-tonne, 4.7-metre vehicle can stay under water for any number of days.

A 1.5 tonne submarine can not carry weapons when even the lightest torpedos weigh around half a tonne like the mark 46.

Sorry for being a buzz kill.

Curious about the AI though.

What if it is a kamikaze sub, with half a ton of explosives.

As I've stated a 1.5 tonne sub can not carry 1/3 of its weight as ordinance in either solid explosives or torpedos. hell many torpedos are larger than that sub.

Not to mention it has to be battery powered which means it won't have any meaningful range without constant ship support.

Also AIs would need a more powerful computer than on you could place in a mini sub

Sorry dude but this is just a hyper optimistic article with little factual information.

Dont be sorry!! its your opinion. Once you have a capability, you can always improve upon it. In my opinion, the UWAVs will hunt in packs. Some of them will have surveillance capabilities and they will identify the target. This information will be relayed to the armed UWAVs in the groups.

Tiny UWAVs of 1.5 tonne would constantly need a ship next to it to charge its battery. In a war environment that would be entirely impractical.

Depends on kind of role you envisage for it is an unmaned underwater vehicle ..size of vehicle can be adjusted according to naval requirements..so can size of the battery pack..

it can be launched from a torpedo tube of sub or ship ..can carry out its mission ..can slip past enemies defenses without being spotted.
Modern battery packs can allow subs to remain submerged for weeks.

Battery power has not gotten to the point where you imagine it to be. Even the US has nothing like what you are describing. might as well build a longer range torpedo with better guidance.

1.5 tonnes is too small for independent missions. If it were at least 100 tonnes it would be semi plausible. Right now it weighs less then a freaking humvee.

How much independence are asking for?

If you think it will sail from Mumbai to Karachi complete its mission and sail back ..thats not gonna happen.

However what can happen is ..it can be deployed outside Karachi harbor ..presumably by a sub.
It can slip into the harbor ..can carry out its mission..eg can record Sonar signatures of Pakistani submarines and ships and then sail back to the mother ship waiting for it outside the harbor.

We develope bigger than this once technology is improved. Even the first aircraft is so tiny. It grows bigger after the usage and development. Dont worry we can do. We never bother about the time frame always. Slow and steady our motto. Cheers to the nation and the lab who developed.

The independence I am looking for is at least traveling 10 Nm without external support. Highly doubtful for such a tiny sub. Let me give you some perspective. It weighs around as much as my Toyata Camry.

The task you are proposing would be much better done by a good diesel electric submarine.

thw article no where mentiones armed role for this vehicle. it will most probably used for under water surviellance. i think its jus a beginning in right direction. once technology is tested and ready, we can always build bigger and better versions.
