India Russia multi-role transport aircraft project runs into rough weather

The Indo-Russian project to develop a multi-role transport aircraft is facing hurdles after the Centre raised objections over the business plan proposed by Moscow for the project.

India was "not satisfied" over the business plan submitted by the Russian side as there was nothing much for its engineers and scientists to do in the development of the proposed aircraft, Defence Ministry sources said here.

Defence Minister AK Antony had expressed India's views on the issue to his Russian counterpart Anatoly E Serdyukov during his visit to the European nation earlier this month for the 11th meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC).

The two sides have now decided to hold a meeting next month to iron out the differences, the sources said.

Antony had also expressed concern at the tardy progress made in the design and development of the MTA.

The two countries want the issues related to the aircraft to be resolved before the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Russia in December.

The project has already got delayed. The Defence Ministry had last year said it would start by beginning of this year.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Russian Companies UAC Transport Aircraft and Rosonboronexport had signed a shareholders' agreement to incorporate a Joint Venture Company for design, development and production of MTA.

The agreement was in pursuance to a deal signed between India and Russian on November 12, 2007 for design, development and production of a MTA.

The Joint Venture Company will have 50:50 shareholding and the investment for the programme was worked out to be USD 600.7 million.

if there is some trouble , then we do have option to buy more C130J from Uncle Sam
Already Indian Airforce wants to increase the number of C130Js from proposed 12 to something like 24-30

And frankly it would be logistically better for us to buy 70-80 C130Js instead of the Proposed 30 C130Js + 45 MRTA that will replace 57 Hawker Siddeley Hawks and 105 AN32

Lockheed Martin have even promised to set up Assembly line in India if IAF order more than 50 C130Js

All izzzz well....

2 options

1) either let us get part of the R&D rather than standing like useless mules

or

2) buy more C130J

either way we are getting new transport aircrafts before 2020

Where did you get that from? :what: Also what's the use for Indian industry, when we remain to be a normal buyer of aircrafts, instead of a beeing a partner? If they would skip MRTA, it would make way more sence to try to join the A400 as a partner in the production and develop the RTA 70 for the military and as a real replacement for the Hawkers and AN32s, because it would be in a more similar class.
The C130Js were bought as additions to the current fleet, mainly for special ops, not as replacements and with the AN32 upgrade, there is more than enough time to develop the MRTA, but I do think that things are running too slow somehow.

Forget about developing something new if there is already C-130J. Why inventing the wheels over again. In the long run, it would be much cheaper and efficient for tax payers of India just to buy the C-130J off the shelf.

Bro we cannot afford 70-80 C130j in any case. Also i doubt FM will give permission for even 30 C130j. If the world economy continues the way it is, then in a couple of years we will be hit badly. Right now we can be sure that the follow on order for 6 more c130j will be placed. Don't worry we already have upgraded our An32's.

Also MRTA will be ours, we can make as many as we like and it will be cheap also. Don't worry we will be inducting more than 100 MRTA in IAF and may be in IA if the dispute between IA and IAF are resolved.
