What's new

India, Russia ink agreement to share GLONASS signals

IRNSS initially planned for India and surrounding regions but there is a plan for global Indian navigation system called GINS but it will take time. Only after IRNSS is fully operational. Until than we have stakes in GLONASS and Galileo.

Isnt that what I said...... IRNSS will be roughly only for the IOR before a bigger and a better one comes up.

Actually I ws replying to your this query...

"I dont think IRNSS is planned for the whole globe."

But the truth is there is a plan to extend IRNSS to GINS as I said.

GINS is NOT an extension or augmentation of the IRNSS.

It will be an entirely new project (if it materialises).

GINS will be extension of IRNSS. They just need minimum of same type of 24 satellites in different orbits instead of 7. Thats it.

Some years back Russia had much lower number of GLONASS satellites operational but later they added more satellites and made it global.

What happened to our GAGAN GPS. I heard one failed attempt was made. I haven't heard anything else about it. All the ground stations are set up but we still need satellites. I haven't seen anything on ISRO website also.
Only thing that I have heard is some news from newspapers and that too only about India's intention to have its own GPS.
Please share any update on GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation).

No. IRNSS and GINS are two very different projects. Heard it from the horses mouth (My college visiting Professor whom i met recently is an ISRO scientist) and frankly there is not much hope for GINS as the Govt is opposed to it as a waste of money.

May be you have got some insider info and GINS has no future but what makes you think that IRNSS and GINS are two very different projects and IRNSS cannot be extended to GINS? There is no difference in IRNSS and GINS satellites. Than what makes you think that it cannot be extended? If you think that if they start the GINS they will launch all new 24 satellites than you are wrong.

Thats where the catch is.

The satellites that was initially proposed for GINS were different from the IRNSS satellites. In the sense they were proposed to have much more advanced capabilities than the satellites that will be used for IRNSS.

And exactly that is why the Govt was not interested in it because ISRO had no satisfactory alternative plan for the satellites that would have been used for IRNSS and which would have been rendered obsolete with the launch of satellites meant for GINS.
