NEW DELHI, Mar. 15, 2011 (Kyodo News International) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday that navy ships are on standby to be sent to Japan to assist it in the aftermath of last Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

''We will spare no effort in assisting the Japanese authorities in dealing with the aftermath of disaster,'' Singh told parliament, adding that the government is also ready to send search-and-rescue teams and materials.

''We are ready to help in the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction phase. Our navy is on standby to send ships to Japan as part of such an exercise,'' he said.

Singh said his government has ordered an immediate technical review of all safety systems of India's nuclear power plants to ensure they can withstand the impact of a large natural disaster like that which hit Japan.

''The Department of Atomic Energy and its agencies including the Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd. have been instructed to undertake an immediate technical review of all safety systems of our nuclear power plants,'' he said.

NPCIL, which operates 20 nuclear power reactors with an installed capacity of 4,780 megawatts, said Monday the plants have a proven safety record.

It cited the severe earthquakes in the western state of Gujarat in 2001 when the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station ''continued to operate safely, supplying much needed power to the region,'' and the tsunami that slammed into the southern state of Tamil Nadu in 2004 when the Madras Atomic Power Station ''was safely shut down without any radiological consequences.''

saaala it is in stand by mode?? bull .... it should have been in the spot right now helping the people there .... and emergency stuff should have been already dispatched there... atleast the medicines... act Dr Singh

Always in stand-by-mode. :hitwall: Like when the Chinese were going ahead with warlike evacuations in Libya we were on 'stand-by-mode'.

Seriously .

You cannot just send your navy without talking to Japan.

good that India has offered help immediately.....hope japan accepts the offer of help and allows Indian teams in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

My hearty condolence to the people of Japan. I am sure they will be back with in few years. This nation is full of surprise.

First remember Japan is not Libya. Its not what we want to do but what Japan needs.

True after all if they can come back from a disastorous war and nuclear attack on two cities then surely can come back on this too. But they will need a little help from friendly countries and we should be there after all Japan has made many investments in infra in India.

Japan is definitely not Libya but Japanese nation is now in a state of paralysis and I am sure they are in need of basic food items, clothings, tents, blankets etc which can be sent.

Thats what they mean by 'stand by'. Whenever Japan gives a green signal they will go there with relief materials. There is nothing to criticize it.

Standby mode?!?!??!!

Okay I understand the IN being on standby but the rescue teams needed to be sent along time ago, the same time as US,RUSSIAN,UK and French rescue teams who were all there by yesterday. In SAR time is critical in trying to find survivors, I hope they are sent soon although I have my doubts, again a complete lack of political will has led to a huge f$$kup, the NDRF has one battalion on standby in Delhi 24/7, 365 days a year why can't they be sent!!???

Mayb MMS is waiting for the Tsunami to reach indian shores. In that case the navy would be required here :P

Seriously man ! Take some responsibility and act according to it. :|

Please tell me, how many navy's have reached Japanese soil yet ??/ What more he can do is ask our navy to get ready, so that they can leave immeditely when the help is sought from us.

Hey man, this is intended to be a "mission of assistance", not an invasion. The MEA and Japanese authorities have to sort out a number of things; what kind of ships will be useful, how will they be deployed, where will they berthed and MOST IMPORTANTLY; what will (or should) they carry in terms of men and material. That is not some child's play.
Hope that helps.

^^^^^^Not child's play but we have to take it on a war footing!!!If we send medicines, food and other relief materials, will the Japanese ask us to come later????This requires some serious attention..........millions are hungry and in need of shelter, even a small consignment of relief materials will help them immensely........................
My two cents........:)
