It probably allows one to mind one's own business more liberally.
A more interventionist country like India (albeit unsuccessfully), may yearn for such title and its understandable.
I won’t say that was a blatant lie but if you were pinnochio your nose would do circumnavigate the earth and poke you back in the butt. Not a single Indian mocks China for being poor.
Oh hell no. Your fantasy again playing up. We have aspirations to develop and are working towards it, but when it comes to WTO, we'd like to remain categorized as developing for as much a long time for the same benefits.
I remember Trump has made similar accusation back then, and if others like Hong Kong and Singapore can continue with developing-country designation (only South Korea cave in to pressure and gave up), I don't see why China cannot?

Haha, in today's geo-political terms controlled by western media, some "developing" countries like South Korea and China are far more advanced in almost every aspects than most of so-called "developed" or "superpower" countries.
I think these countries are concerned that prematurely assuming developed status will create complacency.
Of course, a certain country does not fear such risk. Claiming titles, on the contrary, boosts ego.
