As defpro.com reported, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced that India requested the purchase of 10 C-17s in late April 2010.[4] As the DSCA outlined last year, the contract would also include 45 Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 engines (40 installed and 5 spare engines), 10 AN/ALE-47 counter-measures dispensing systems, 10 AN/AAR-47 missile warning systems, as well as further associated equipment and services.

5 Spare engines is too little.. We should have bought at least 10 spare engines ( 1 for each plane )...

More can be bought at anytime- when and if needed. I'm sure the US would be more than happy to do so. And these are not Russian engines-they are very reliable.

Agree with you. 20 idle spares are gonna be questionable as far as reliability goes. You don't change plane engines for decades. Forget airplanes, howoften have you changed your car engines? 5 spares are sufficient.

Why are the C -17 so expensive?

What can these planes do, then carry a lot of stuff and land on different type of land?

I hope this order comes with ToT of the engines, other wise India made a dumb decision.

C-17s are replacicing IL transport which has done a great job and has neared it end of life , which cant be upgraded.

C-17s have double the capabilities of IL

compared to IL-76:
They fly further, with more payload and land on a shorter runway for less fuel, with less crew and less maintenance wear.

And at more then $500m per plane, its pathetic to be honest.

However after googling the deal, on USA part of the deal is ...

June 15/11: Boeing and India sign the deal for 10 C-17s, to be delivered during 2013-2014. India will also join the Globemaster Sustainment Partnership. On Boeing’s part, it will invest 30% of the $4.1 billion contract in Indian civilian and military industries. The Letter of Offer and Acceptance is reported to specifically include the build-out of a high-altitude engine test facility and trisonic wind tunnel facility at India’s DRDO. Rumors place those projects’ cost at $500 million, but the long-term value to Indian research

everything from the U.S.A its expencive...:disagree: that's why a country so big as India should start building their own cargo planes using DRDO tech and advice from Russia... build your own like china does at a 1/4 of the total price and the money will stay home...

I think Indian defence establishment has the best idea- buy the best, no compromises, with the money you have (a lot btw) and let your domestic industries mature in time (with a little help from the tens of BILLIONS in offsets!). This way you have best of both worldsa formidable arsenal and a expanding domestic defence industry that one day will be able to compete. Don't forget india is a very young country things take time and as for the Chinese equivalent.... Its not on the same planet!!
