India lags behind neighbours in civic engagement: Gallup poll

2011-01-19 11:00:00

Washington, Jan 19 (IANS) India is ranked 48th far behind neighbours Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal in a Gallup poll of civic engagement in 130 countries measuring individuals' likelihood to volunteer their time and assistance to others.

While India scored only 28 percent, Sri Lanka with a 51 percent civic engagement index figured eighth in the global list topped by the United States at 60 percent followed by Ireland with the same score and Australia in the third place with 59 percent.

Pakistan was ranked 27th with a score of 42 percent while Nepal was placed 40th with 30 percent.

In general, the Gallup poll showed people with high civic engagement are positive about the communities where they live and actively give back to them. Data from 130 countries show that, in general, adults in developed countries are much more likely to be civically engaged than those in the developing world, the noted US public opinion research agency said,

Respondents, it said were asked whether they have done any of the following in the past month: donated money to a charity, volunteered time to an organization, or helped a stranger or someone they didn't know who needed help.

In 127 out of 130 countries, people are much more likely to either say they have helped a stranger in need or donated money in the past month than they are to say they volunteered their time to an organization, the poll found.

While the most civically engaged countries are primarily in the developed world, the level of participation in each activity the index measures varies significantly among countries, it said

For example, 83 percent of Thais say they donated money to charity in the past month, among the highest levels in the world. However, 16 percent say they volunteered their time.

Conversely, Americans are much less likely than Thais to say they donated money, but Americans are among the most likely in the world to say they volunteered their time.

There are somethings statistics does very well, but the friendliness of a people is not one of those.

That said I am happy that Canada did well.

That's weird... I live in Ireland. Irish people are very friendly indeed but Indians are just as helpful. Just my opinion... Don't jump at my throat.

EDIT: Oh, and please don't try to tell me that Americans are the most helpful, I'm not going to buy that BS in a million years.

Congrats S_O_C_O_M for finding another anti-India article. But I think you failed to notice that China, India's major neighbour and Your Friend is rated even below India...

Haha! Just noticed that. So that makes the title of this article incorrect. Oh well. Anyway I prefer to go by my personal experience. Chinese people are okay and Pakistanis in general are even friendlier, maybe because more Pakistanis speak english unlike the Chinese... And Americans sure as hell aren't the most helpful.

Can't speak for the Irish folks. I do find American people as one of the most giving people. I spent many hours in college along with many other students building houses for Habitat for Humanity", an NGO that build houses for low income people.

Majority of Americans are good people and they love to help others and they love to donate money to charity, the American public donated more than enough to Haiti and an American actess, Angelina Jolie, donated millions to flood victims in Pakistan but the US government just cares about its own interests and can not be trusted.

fallstuff,

I think you might find that Americans in general can come off as quite arrogant in comparison to Europeans. Having said that, the British aren't exactly the friendliest of people either.

That may be true indeed but I wasn't talking about disaster donations etc. I was talking about face to face contact and in that regard, the Americans don't fare too well. I'm just speaking from my personal experience.

This is not about friendliness i think.

This is more to do with

1) community life (how much organised activity happens in your community and how many participate)
2) organised religion
3) religion based donations
4) Affluence of people
5) local culture

Americans indeed have the first 4, the last one i'm not so sure about.

Americans in general are very friendly people. If you are walking by, nine out of ten will either say "how u doing " or at least make a friendly eye contact with a nod. I am not sure if same can be said about the New Yorkers though.

When it comes to foreign policy they rally behind the leaders. That is also true for people from any nation.

I think its about population too. Anyone wondered why China and India are far behind? Cause you only need so many people to do voluntary and social work. Thats how I look at it anyways. In school i remember getting turned away from flood relief drives, cause the buses would get full.

That is what the media makes you think. Americans in general are very helpful, tolerant and sensitive. Most of the westerners are. Most of South Asians except for Sri Lankans in my opinion are rude . You can sense the hospitality of a community from the service you get in their restaurants.

There are a lot of good Americans. In fact the best teachers I've had were in America when I went to school there. Good honest people that really cared.

But I'll agree with this too.
