India invites investment from Bangladesh in power sector

India invites investment from Bangladesh in power sector - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: India today invited Bangladesh to participate in setting up power projects, particularly in its north eastern states saying such joint ventures would help both the countries.

"The participation of Bangladesh in power projects in India, particularly in the north-eastern states of India adjoining Bangladesh, would be welcome," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said when asked about cooperation in power sector with Bangladesh.

He pointed out that India has a liberal policy permitting 100 per cent foreign direct investment in respect of projects relating to electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

"Such joint ventures in the power sector involving the two countries would also facilitate the evacuation of power from north-eastern India to Bangladesh and through Bangladesh into other parts of India," Akbaruddin said.

He said the details of such cooperation can be discussed at the forthcoming meeting of the Steering Committee on Power held at the level of Secretaries between the two countries.

He said that during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's September, 2011, visit to Bangladesh the two countries had agreed to promote trans-border cooperation in the management of shared water resources, hydropower potential and eco-systems and in the area of connectivity.

"It was also agreed that arrangements for cooperation in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, including electricity from renewable or other sources, would be established," Akbaruddin said.

The remarks come at a time when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is on a two-day visit to Tripura.

Of course this BAL government will invest in your energy sector, India doesnt let us extract our own coal so that we invest in your energy sector.

I think bangladesh is a sovereign country, why would you need India's permission to extract your own coal.
Do you need India's permission to buy chinease weapon's too?

I don't see anything wrong with this proposal from GoI. And if we can mine coal in the NE without digging our own soil, that's even better for our environment. :D

PS: Although I don't think we'll do the mining here. Anyway, investment in NE power sector is win-win for both parties.

I think it is probably for hydroelectric projects. If bangladeshis invest, they wont be complaining about rivers and stuff.

Well, I will say one thing when it comes to business put your emotions in Dustbin, We Indian and Chinese have put our emotions in Dustbin and planning for $100 Billion trade by 2015, Chinese companies have already made plans to invest $40 Billion in India. That is the key to economic success of both countries.

You do know america has huge reserves of oil, but most of their oil come from the mid east. Its called storing them for later use, in case of emergency and things. Anyway coal burning is quite harmful to the environment

If the river only belongs to india(i.e never enters bangladesh) i say go ahead with the plans. But if the river flows through bangladesh, we have a problem

Bangladesh being unable to extract coal from its own land is due to the political pressure from Bangladesh, BNP government tried it, but were unable to due to this reason. My family tried setting up a coal powerplant but the government didn't give the permission, finally aziz khan of summit group got permission for setting up the coat powerplant but it only has to import the coat....why import when we have huge resservees for the next 50 years while the country is facing an epic energy crisis? even america is dependant on its coal and in fact the biggest coal producer in the world and it gets 50% of its electricity from coal alone. This is just an Indian ploy for us to buy electricity from them.

And how does india stops bangladesh from extracting its own coal ?

Last time during BNP government when the government tried to extract coal from its own land, there was an huge protest by the environmental hippies in which people were even killed.....that was sponsered by the Indian government.

Couple of things,

You guys don't have huge amount of coal.

Most of the coal is located in densely populated area(towns and villages literally on top of the seam line) or are very close to water stream(very high risk of pollution). The environmental and social impact will be so huge that Bangladesh is better off importing coal from elsewhere.

I have done about 3 months of consultancy work with your Mineral development department, let me know if you need more info. In the meantime stop spreading your lie that India doesn't let Bangladesh to mine its coal. :disagree:
