The Hindu : News / National : "India can help build democracy in Arab world"

Assistance will be given only if a specific country sought it: Krishna

India has said it would be “very positive” to requests by Arab countries to usher in democracy and help build institutions that sustain it. However, the offer made by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna was laced with circumspection.

“India does not believe in interfering in the affairs of another country. We will take the cue at an appropriate time depending on how they want India to help. India will be willing to be of some assistance to them. But let the situation arise,” he observed while interacting with newspersons on his way to Kuwait.

Changes hailed

India, he said, welcomed the changes being brought in by the people on the street, but Mr. Krishna was insistent that help would be given only if a specific country sought it.

“India's position is that it is closely monitoring the events and depending on how the situation develops, India will certainly try to position itself to be of advantage to forces of democracy so dear to India's heart.”

The Minister said the government had readied naval ships to sail for Libya should the need arise. In case evacuation of all the 18,000 Indians is required, “we will have to use the warships.” He described the situation in Libya as “obviously bad.”

“No delay”

Mr. Krishna did not share the perception that India had delayed its evacuation response considering that over a dozen countries had already done so. “I don't think so. We have to get permission from the Libyan authorities.”

First india has to build a true democracy at home(not like the present one). then only it can help other countries in building true democracy.Present democracy is more of a mobocracy where the one who can buy votes or the one who can create the mob wins election.

Who has requested India to build democracy in their country? Arabs?

Arabs consider India as a Hindu nation and their main concern with India is in the field of trade and commerce, nothing else. Hence, this news is totally absurd.

I'm glad to see this- this is a pretty bold statement for India and it is flexing its " responsible world leader" role . typically India does not say a word about any atrocities in other countries.

help build democracy- help build democracy- help build democracy.. Not usher, there are plenty of Arab countries who like India. Arabs like most in the world do business with Christan's too. You see when you sit across the table from Arabs, they like others are looking for great trade and business deals. they are not asking what have you done for Kashmir lately or walking away because of the person being Hindu.

so india is becoming a mini US, well this is what he US wants.

funny thing is, india is still in the process of building its own democracy, whilst good in some areas hardly a shining example.

^^^your opinion of India not withstanding- all world leaders, shoud lead in world affairs. there are instances in history that are fuled forward when the US comes out and supports them- .

If Arab countries REQUEST, then India will help.

India is not going to help if its not uninvited. And some Pakistanis may be surprised but anyone who has spend some time in the Arab world, GCC countries or even Palestine will know that India by and large has good will among the Arabs.

There are no historical baggage of exploitation and wars like the West has, nor any conflicts of interests.

Indira Gandhai used to be a big PLO supporter at one time.

i wonder if ay arab poster could inform us they would seek india's help on this issue, when there are better more qualified nations....just wondering.

is this basically india trying to be a global player?

last time I checked the ruling decisions makers in Arab countries were not registered here. In case you missed it - we had few articles posted here where India won some major contracts in Arab lands. Yes India is trying to be vocal global leader, advocating democracy in the world.
