Did India commit to buying more defence products from the US in return for the nuclear deal? Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice hints to a purported undertaking in her upcoming book on her years in the Bush administration.

“The Indians made it clear, too, that they hoped to become a customer for US military hardware,” Rice says in a chapter titled, “Building a new relationship with India.” The context of the Indian commitment was the nuclear deal.

India, Rice says, wanted nuclear energy and wanted to break out of the constraints imposed on it by restrictions on the US export of relevant technology, on account of its nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998.

“The proposed civil nuclear deal would make it possible for the United States and American companies to help India develop its potentially-rich market for this environment-friendly energy source.”

The US has faced disappointments on both counts. Its companies found themselves thrown out of the race for multi-billion dollars deal for the Indian Medium Multi-role Combat Aircraft earlier this year.

And its two premium nuclear technology companies— Westinghouse and GE (both Japanese in one way or another)— have had no success in getting nuclear deals in India despite sites already earmarked for them. Lockheed and Boeing, the two aircraft giants, lost out on technical grounds. And the nuclear technology firms find the lack of competent accident liability laws the reason for staying out, and losing to Russian and French companies.

The US authorities and its non-government adjuncts in the think-tanks had reacted with surprising horror to the loss of the aircraft deal saying the US might have been “over-generous” and that India didn’t deserve the nuclear deal.

Or the promise of support for India’s claim to a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC), committed by President Barack Obama on his visit to India in November 2010. (India is serving a temporary two-year term on the council).

Tempers have calmed down since, after India bought Boeing’s C-17 military transport planes worth over $4 bn.

Who cares, even if this deal wouldn't have signed and india would have gone for the best product and in many cases its US made. So whatever anyone says we would have purchased Apache or P8i or C130j (not sure about C17 because deal is very expensive and FM might have rejected it otherwise) in any case.

i don't know what's the fuss... rather than depending upon bulky, maintenance intensive russian products, we are vouching for top of the line tech from USA.? Isn't it common sense more so coz we can now afford it ?

These things(memoirs) are written in a sensationalist manner only for fanboys like the ones which dwells on pdf...meh !!

whatever,
the deals were always good to us.
the c-130js,c-17s and p-8is everything.
btw,the apache isn't finalized either.(correct me if wrong)

???

Nuclear deal= We win

futuristic US weapons= We win

Where's the problem? :D

^^The American Howitzers(probably going to be rejected)and the Apache platform have go through the Anti-Corruption Squad before they get approved.Be rest assured,Our ends are covered.

Is it a question of whether we committed to buy American military hardware? No country that I can think of will refuse to buy American weapon systems and platforms if they are offered unless they are certain niche products in which Europeans or Russians have the edge and even in those areas, the American equivalents are well worth the money. The point is that high performance US military hardware were never offered to us before and even if they were, we did not have the money. The US market was closed to us all these decades.

If the deal was that in exchange for its support for the Nuclear Agreement, the US would open its top of the line defence sector to India, then it was nothing short of win win for us. The high performance imports from America will really give an edge to our military, while we are in no way barred from getting stuff from Europe or Russia where it suites us.
